I decided to be a little lazy and I did the job without removing the whole unit (I left the bowden cables and electrical connector in place), which in retrospect is probably a mistake. There's enough play to get to everything, but removing and putting back on the clips and springs is a royal pain. If I were going to do it again, I'd follow the directions exactly instead of trying to save time and energy.

I used a generic silver paint which matches very closely to the original color. I'll probably create some stickers on clear labels to match the original handles, at some point. I'm quite pleased with the final result:
