A low mileage 99 or 2000 already has double row bearing, will cost less than a c4, might be the way to go.

Stop worrying and learn to LOVE the 996. Except for a corvette, the Porsche 996 is the greatest bargain high end sports car on the planet. This is a fact. Is it a daily driver? Of course it is! My 2002 C2 cost $74,000 new, I sure hope it's a daily driver. Mine has 118,000 miles on it now and drives perfect. If you require a daily driver then spend more and get a car will all the maintenance complete, upgrades done, with documentation. That puts you in the high 20's to low 30's range for a mint condition Porsche. The whole IMS thing carries an EXTREMELY LOW risk factor as of today. All these cars have been on the road at least 10 - 15 years now. The IMSs have been replaced, or have never failed, or in 99% of all current vehicles will never be a problem. If it makes you feel better replace the IMS ($2,000) or have documentation it was done. Even after that you're sitting in a mint porsche for $30k or in some cases MUCH less than that.

Cheap to own? There are no Porsche 911s that are cheap to own. None. Believe me. None. Expect to spend on average $2,000 - $4,000 every single year.

There is a yellow 996 with GT3 kit on craigslist. If that is your car, looks really nice.I love the 996 GT3 body. I am only looking to buy a 996 with low miles however.
Yes - that is the car. Understood on the low mileage request but come and drive it and you'll get a feel for a 996. The car was never driven in the winter and the mileage is Vancouver to LA on the freeway, fully documented maintenance history. So it drives very very tight. It's an unusual car. The mileage (201,000 Kms / 125,625 Miles) turns people off, no question. But when you get in it you'll see what I am talking about. I really like it and I'm driving a 987.2 Spyder. Contact me when you get back into Vancouver and we can run it up the Sea 2 Sky or a quick hill climb up Cypress Mt. Super fun car.

Had a C4 DD... Loved it. Sold it and bought back my old 951 (purer sports car)

Used the 951 as a daily driver (for the summer) and sold it last November. Missed it so much, that i bought a 996TT and now use it as DD.

I have been very pleased with P-cars as DDs and drove the 996 all year.

I agree i think the 996 is the best deal on a sports car right now. used corvettes are a good deal also but not my thing.

2000-4000 isn't bad at all, and I would do most of my own maintenance. I like doing my own work and it saves money. I think 996 parts are actually cheaper than 944 parts. some 944 parts are ridiculously expensive like $600 for control arms, 300+ for a new water pump.

yeah my 944 has been my daily driver but it is not the most comfortable car and doesn't have the best AC. 944 has been reliable but it has required a lot of expensive repairs, mostly due to age.

Bought a 2002 996.2 and love it. It had really low miles (15k) and the IMSB retrofit completed which made me take the jump. I'm now putting miles on the car faster than they have accumulated in the car's lifetime!
