996 - entire hood mechanism swap - possible?
Hello!
Last year I bought my first Porsche - a slightly sun weary but otherwise not half bad 1999 996 cabriolet. I've slowly been bringing her back to former glory but have a tonne of questions for which this forum has been a god send so THANK YOU!
I have now also acquired a written off 2004 996 from which I've been taking a lot of bits that are either missing or knackered on mine.
Now to my big question; the 2004 996 has a hood that is in excellent condition with the later glass window - mine has the plastic which is way beyond polishing thanks to 15 years of Middle East sunshine. Is it possible to take the entire roof mechanism/cradle etc from the 2004 and put it on the 1999? I know just a hood swap wouldn't work due to the size of the glass window and the fact that the 1999 mechanism relies on the plastic window folding. I have met a mechanic here who claims he has done it before but every other mechanic I speak to start crying at the mere thought of it.
Does anyone have any experience of this kind of a conversion or is it simply not possible?
Thank you in advance!
Lee

Some tips and where to buy
I changed the plastic window on our old 99 Cab to a glass window insert. No probs. There are some details about which to be aware.
We sold the car about 3 years ago, so my memory of exact details is sketchy.
However, do an internet search for the fellow who sells the glass/fabric zip out inserts. Very friendly fellow; gave a price break too. (No affiliation whatsoever.)
Here is the link I posted from back then on the Pelican forum:

996_DXB, I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, but this thread seems to indicate that your Mk2 donor softtop (hood, roof) will not fit your Mk1:
https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...-on-996-a.html
Yes, it is entitled "997 softtop..." but the donor car turned out to be a 996 Mk2, not a 997.
Still different fitment, but keep reading the thread. I think there are a few alternatives mentioned, around the 5th or 6th reply.
By the way, I have no personal experience with this conversion, as I own a coupe. I just remembered the post when I read your question today.
Good luck!
