Rear ended in NOVA.
Got rear ended from a "distracted" driver yesterday. I'll post pictures later. It's probably a $4-$5k repair - new tail light, middle lens, bumper cover and bumperette at least.
I'm really disappointed. Especially that I'll now have a black mark on my Carfax.
Any recommended body shops in Northern VA?

Sorry to hear that. It makes me crazy. I see at least three of those every day during my commute. I'm guessing the person was using a cell phone. I'd like to see a thousand dollar fine and points on your license for texting or talking on a cell phone. And a suspension for anyone who is caught and has been driving less than three years.

Look into diminished value before a final settlement. In most states it ONLY works if you claim on the OTHER insurance, i.e. if you go through your insurance and they recoup the loss from the at-fault party you cannot claim diminished value. So be careful. On a 996 there is surely diminished value as a number of people will just flat out refuse to buy it due to the prior damage, no matter how many Celette benches the car sees or who repairs it. I just went through all of this on another one of our cars. It sucks, sorry it happened to you.

Meh. Depends on the accident and how good the repair was.
One of the 3 hits ours took was a minivan not paying any attention and smacked it in the 15-20mph range. In that one both rear quarters, tail lights, and tail pipes had to be replaced as well as the wing, deck lid, and bumper skin. No damage under the skin (other than some clips).
The other two were <5mph idiots busy with something far more important than paying attention to traffic and were in the realm of what the OP is talking about.
A good shop that doesn't cut corners can repair what kind of stuff easy and you'd never know the difference without Carfax.
Of course then you have "repairs" like the PO of my last e30 had done where welding 3/4" steel plate to the strut hosing to replace the spring perch and masking tape are acceptable "repairs". That's the stuff you have to fear and look out for...

So what is learned in all of this?
Even if you change your IMS and do all PM stuff including taking care of your paint, some schmuck can hit you at any time.
If you have a rear end collision, your motor could start ingesting oil, even though you changed your IMS as experienced by DrMems.
Fix it and trade it into Carmax before your motor goes.
(Semi-kidding)...
Hopefully you can get this straightened out with the least amount of headaches from insurance.
P.S. Please don't post a picture post repair of your car with 997 lights.

You can get yourself a decent set of LED tails for the cost of the one light that needs to be replaced...see if you can work with your shop...

I lost a car last year on I-66 because of a texter/tweeter/FBer. And you're right, this happens every single day commuting in NoVA. This is far, far more dangerous than someone driving at 85 on the beltway.

Adcampo, take & keep photos to show the damage & repair. Keep the repair documents. If & when you sell you can avoid any debate about whether there had been structural damage. Your description sounds like bolt on parts & you should come out of fine.
