Default Thoughts on this 996TT

OK, I'm just looking for your impressions on this car. Don't hold back - I have nothing invested in it, I just saw it on eBay. It's really more of a discussion topic than a car I am seriously considering purchasing. I doubt very seriously that I'll buy anything before September, unless the perfect car comes along at a good price. I'm in that "What is the perfect car for me?" phase. I value your guys' opinions - I'll ultimately buy what I like, but you all probably have some good ideas I haven't considered.

I am a big fan of Speed Yellow and the 6-speed is a plus. But, I also like Guards Red, Seal Gray and Cobalt Blue. Plus, the wife can drive an automatic. Other stuff like the body kit, I just don't know. Racing seats? Cool, but I've never had to live with them on a day to day basis.

For example, my 996 was black, and when it was clean it was freaking gorgeous. But as anyone who has a black car for a daily driver will tell you . . . Also, although I really like tan interiors (my all-time favorite color combo on any sports car is bright red over tan interior), they just don't age as well as black interiors.

So, take this car and just spew what comes to mind. Have a thought on aftermarket vs. factory nav? Let's hear it. Here goes!

Been for sale now 2 months and the cost of the upgrades has gone up from "over $60,000" to "over $65,000".

Reads like a good investment...

With those upgrades that has to be a tracked car.

If you are comfortable with that very strong possibility, if the car checks out -- a thorough used car check out with a test ride and drive followed by a PPI -- and you can agree upon a price with the seller, buy the car.

Why would there be 5 owners in 36000 miles. It looks to me like owners get tired of the car quickly for some reason.

There are lots of things that I do like about that car, but some that I don't. Personally, I don't like the body kit. I do like the seats and I have no issue with the aftermarket nav. I had the same nav unit in my 996 C4S and it was good. Like you, I would worry about the seats for every day use. Does the car have an aftermarket exhaust? If so, then be careful. It's hard to make a turbo sound as nice as Fister mufflers on a normally aspirated car. They either seem to be too quiet or way too loud.

Good point. I wonder if the color is too polarizing and wears on you quickly? Racing seats probably don't encourage frequent non-track use.

Depends on the specific racing seat but generally racing seats suck for around town.

I'm, for whatever reason, very wary of ads that trumpet the cost of the upgrades. I'm not sure exactly why, but something tells me someone who has pumped that much money into the car won't be looking to sell at a realistic price.

If I wanted a track only or track focused car this one would be right in the wheelhouse, but it is a little blingy for a daily driver type car.

I would prefer one that is not so LOUD LOOKING on the inside and outside but that is just my preference.

Agree with that statement. Plus I would think those seats would get old fast anywhere but the track.

Eh, it's a little much, I much prefer my cars to be way more understated. Yellow wouldn't be a no-go, but yellow AND all the other stuff is. Looks more like something I'd have a poster of on my wall in junior high school. But I won't knock you for liking it...

As far track duty, I'd want to be damn sure I really knew what I was doing on the track before taking that anywhere near there. It just screams "pass me". I'm sure we've all been to regular open-track days where there are a couple of guys in full race suits, Piloti shoes, HANS devices with the "loudest" cars holding court in the paddock but they often seem not to be able to keep up with a regular Joe in a much more basic car anywhere but a long straight.

I prefer the "wolf in sheep's clothing" look. But I definitely like bright sporty colors for turbos. Yellow, Red, Cobalt Blue, White; even white is a compromise cuz there is no hue. But you'll get tired of the seats real quick. As far as mods, I prefer model correct mods. For example we all know that this is not a RUF, so why the steering wheel? Also when I have to pay a lot more because of the mods, they better be exactly what I would have gotten.

The seats and body kit kill it for me, but I do like the aftermarket navigation.
