Question Daytime running lights install

Hi everyone,

I'm a Rennlist newby with a question: I recently moved (back) to Canada, and brought my 2001 996 with me from the US. Now, I'm in the process of getting it certified here in Toronto.

To drive in Ontario, daytime running lights are required. Does anyone know how to go about installing daytime running lights on a 996? I'm hoping it's just something simple (fingers crossed). I'm aware of the easy fuse hack to turn the lights on when the key is in the ignition, but I'd rather do this the proper way if possible (and not ridiculously expensive).

There is a plug that only comes live as the ignition is switched on. Inside the panel by your right foot. I know nothing about DRL installation but thought this plug may come in handy for your installation. Also a page about installation is here http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...l-install.html

I should imagine that a set of fog lights from this link http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...s+led&_sacat=0 could easily be used for your installation. If I were doing them on mine I would fix them to my mesh inserts which cover my radiator air inlets and wire them direct to the plug which only comes live as the ignition is switched on. Or I would remove the front bumper and cut out slots in it to accept the fog light installation. I am sure a small fuse could be inserted 'inline' between the plug and the lights. The whole job would be less than $25.... Just a thought.

I just purchased an '04 996 that was a Canada car. I don't have it yet but I know two things about the lights;
- it is rigged so the fog lights stay on all the time the ignition is on
- some funky LED lights are installed just below the headlights

I guessed that the fog lights didn't satisfy the Canada DMV and then the LED lights were installed. I am sure the LEDs were cheap.

I will know more about this on Saturday.

I had this done twice - first on my 986 and then on my 996 (both US cars). Canadian Tire did the first one and my Indy shop did the second. Not sure exactly what is involved, but it isn't a big job - I think it was only about 1 hour labour charge.

Hi all,

Thanks for the info! Very helpful. Triple Black, do you happen to know if there was a substantial charge for parts? I'm assuming it's just a relay or some other minor thing. Ideally, I'd like to do the fix myself, but I can take it to a shop as well.

I'm sure if you look at the wiring diagrams, you should be able to figure out what is different between Canada and the US.

Just checked my service record for the 996 - was 1.5 hr labour plus a $15.95 relay (sorry, no part number).
