Default How to remove headlight covers?

Hey everyone,

My new-to-me MkI Aero Kit came with these headlight covers and I'm not a big fan: http://directcartoys.com/1997-2001-9...-P2320629.aspx

I tried to pull up on them last night to see how easy they would come off and they seem to be stuck on pretty well. Any thoughts on how to possibly remove them?

Ideally, find out what method was used (e.g. 2-sided tape, silicone, etc.) so you can tailor the removal process. Maybe try a hair dryer to soften whatever adhesive is in the back, then run dental floss to gently peel off. Best of luck.

P.S. Not sure who made your current covers but give these guys a ring and ask how covers are mounted & best way to remove:

Be sure to post up on the method you come up with and how it turns out. I have the same covers on mine and am honestly hesitant to remove them for fear of damaging something.

Good luck!

If it was easy I'd like to take one off and leave one on and look at the car a bit. I'm thinking that I would prefer them off though.

Use an old credit card or similar to start a small opening in a narrow area of the cover (above the fog light seems to work well) by wedging the card between the lens of the headlight and the cover. Once you have a slot open, carefully feed a piece of heavy denim thread or strong string through the gap and then use the string to floss between the cover and the lens all the way around. Clean up any remaining silicone or adhesive with mineral spirits.

Another excellent idea. I'll try everything and report back. Probably won't get to till early next week. Stay tuned.

Update:

I can't use the credit card idea as the covers are simply secured down too well. Nothing will fit inbetween the cover and lense. My next step will be to use the blow dryer.

Did you try removing the headlight from the car first?

I know I looked at removing mine but they seemed to be on there very well. I would think if you removed the headlights from the car you would be able to see the configuration and method used to attach them better.

I would think this would be the safe way to go, at least you could inspect it before breaking something.

10 year old thread but am now in the same boat.. tried fishing line and heat but that was slow going and kept getting blisters so used a trim remove tool and forced jt between and got the covers off.

Anyone had a good way to get the excess silicon off off the headligjt ? Tried metho spirits and plastic razor but its so slow and hard to get off all the silicon...

Toluene is probably best but it may also dissolve the housing. Check on a scrap piece of polycarbonate before using. Also use proper ppe (gloves and good ventilation or a repirator). Toluene is toxic.
