Question Crickets in the Instrument Cluster?

I was stopped at the light the other day and the radio was off and I could hear a very subtle revolutionary screeching coming from the cluster. I realized it was from the Tachometer. When I rev'ed the engine, noise went away but at idle it just goes "squieech, squieech, squieech, ...." I would say about 10x/sec

Is my tach about to fart and go dead?

Thanks!

I don't understand why an electronic cluster would squeak - if a stepper motor is used to position the needle, it's not turning constantly.

Is there any chance that this is a creak from the cluster rubbing the dash at certain RPM, or maybe alternator noise from the front left speaker?

If the tach was mechanical, this would make sense - but it seems odd for an electronic cluster...

OK, so the tach is not mechanical. So what you say makes sense. I'll check again and see if its something rubbing from vibration and good point on the alternator static noise but the radio was off.

Thanks dude!

Yup! I can't imagine any garage or household without it.

WD-40 is not a lubricant

Use a Tri-flow or another teflon spray

There should be a freakin' snopes entry for WD-40...

It most definitely *is* a lubricant, though a light one. Look at the MSDS sheet if you don't believe me.
"25% petroleum based oil"

WD-40 is not a really good lubricant, unless you randomly spray it anywhere.

It actually happens to work perfectly on cricket legs...

Note: Since Hurdi is British, and the British do some things on the wrong side, it may help to hold the can upside-down when applying WD-40 to anything he recommends using it on. If you don't have room to invert the can, at least consider holding it in your off-hand - i.e. if you're right-handed, use your left hand.

If none of this helps, try relabeling the can "04-DW".

OP, any news on your crickets?
