Craigslist for me also. But I think Auto Trader is a good site without too many scams.

Get a friend who has a Manhein account. You will flip when you see what you can find there....

Searchtempest lets you search multiple Craig's List regions, which is handy if you're willing to travel to get your car. This is actually how I found my 996: at the time there were many more for sale in California than here in Washington.

ManheiM is a nationwide, dealer auction network. To actually buy cars you must have a dealer license and auction credentials, FYI

I can buy through Manheim, it is not a good tool for 996 shopping. The newer the car, the more useful the auctions are. For the older stuff there are still good cars to be had, but they are few and far between.

Concur. I have had a dealer license for 13 years but have never bought a Porsche through the auction. I just don't feel like I have the opportunity to properly evaluate a Porsche at the auction. Funny because I have bought easily 200+ cars at the auction over the years including high end stuff like Land Rovers, Jaguars and an E55 AMG. Always chicken out when a P-car comes up though.

BTW - Have bought all 4 of my Porsches on ebay.

I've actually had fantastic luck buying Porsches through Manheim. Their condition reports are spot on, and I only buy very highly rated cars. No records is a downside, I simply budget for a full service to insure that they are up to date. There just aren't many good older cars on there, 987/997 is about as old as they get, and there are far more .2 cars on there. I have a really nice 2009 Cayman and 2010 Boxster being shipped to me right now.

It's fun to see the different perspectives. If a guy is wanting to buy a car it looks to him as though most the ones he finds seem to be overpriced, if a guy is selling one he looks at the prices others are selling for and says "it looks like they're giving them away."

Found mine Dirty with a Flat Battery in the back of a used car lot in Hilton Head SC...There was a Boxster S on the front of the lot that caught my eye...They just purchased my 911 from an Estate Sale for dirt cheap..I asked how much they'd take for it...Checked the VIN, autocheck, Carfax, and went through the car myself and picked it up for a steal...
