I have recently purchased an 04 Carrera with 90k from a Porsche dealer. When looking at the car there were a couple of issues with it namely the rms and aos were leaking. The dealer agreed to fix those issues and anything else leaking in the engine which I am happy about.

My question is, is it worth replacing the ims bearing while I am in there. The dealer mechanic who does appear to know his stuff doesnt think it is worth doing as it looks to be in good shape, has lasted as long as it has etc. Why replace parts that arent broke kinda thing.

Obviously the engine is out of the car as they are replacing the aos and rms so I am thinking for an extra 7 - 800 $ it might be worth replacing anyhow with the upgraded bearing.

Is there any danger in replacing a perfectly good bearing? is it a no brainer to have it replaced or will it be fine to leave it in their and keep checking the filter for signs of impending doom.

Thanks

First of all congrats and welcome to Rennlist. I normally would say stick with your original IMSB, BUT because they have to separate the engine and transmission to do the RMS, I'd say you should replace it while they are in there. Pics would be nice to see.

Have them check the clutch, too. If it's close to needing replaced, I'd throw that in the pile. It's only money, after all...

Pull the motor, change the above items, IMO.

Totally a no brainer to change your IMSB so that you won't have to deal with any IMSBS later. Oh and BTW, that mechanic sounds like an idiot!

Funny thing is, the car was a rennlisters car.Believe they traded it with the dealership. He did the clutch and water pump last year so thats all good.

I dont have any actual pictures yet as they are still working on it, but here is one from the dealer ad

It is well worth it, otherwise you'll want to replace it and end up paying over $1,000 in unnecessary labor just to do it. You can get the kit for our MK2 cars on ebay for $632. DO IT!

I agree with the comments above, I'd replace it.

It's such a simple thing to do while you're in there. Do it. Buy the part and hand it to the guy along with a six pack of beer and have him do it while he is in there.

If I were you, I would do it if for nothing else than peace of mind and a nice blurb to tell the next person when you go to sell it.

I think you ought to keep it and just drive it harder. Once you get a hundred thousand miles of hard driving you're home free.

Congrats on the purchase!

I would definitely replace it while the motor was out, peace of mind is huge. If my C4 didn't have it replaced, I wouldn't have bought it.
