LN's recommended service interval
I wonder what the sample sizes are for these cases. I'd guess there are FAR more single row replacements out there than dual, so it would be likely that failures would be greater as well, whether due to installation or faulty materials. Again, statistics. If the numbers installed are equivalent then 12 failures compared to none is a big difference. However, if there are 12 singles installed for every 1 double, then perhaps the law of averages will catch up and sooner or later ONE dual will fail, resulting in the exact same failure ratio. This of course assumes that every failure is actually reported.
Doesn't give me a lot of confidence in their product if they need to hedge their bet like that. Does Porsche have a service interval on that part?
LN also says that once you see those tell-tale shavings in your oil filter, they do NOT recommend the bearing replacement, as there will remain junk floating around in your engine that may ultimately cause the new replacement bearing to fail.
I'm sorry I ever started reading these posts . . .

Ah, so it's cool if YOU make up the stats. Got it.
More b00bies, please.
This is kind of sad. The FIRST thing I do when I have picked the make and model of a car I'm interested in buying is to find and join the most active forum(s) for that vehicle so I can learn everything I can about (a) possible modifications/upgrades, (b) maintenance/repair issues to be aware of, and (c) start reading the FAQ/DIY maintenance threads so I'll have some idea what I'm doing when it comes time for brakes, oil, etc.
Forums like Rennlist are fantastic for getting up to speed quickly with the specifics of a new vehicle, especially since the "handbooks" that come with cars are written at a fifth-grade reading level and assume that the average buyer has the IQ of a Golden Retriever.

Hey, Schnell, I seriously do apologize if I came across as patronizing or negative in any way towards you, not my intention at all. It just bothers me when people take an informal "poll" as gospel and then regurgitate it ad nauseum (not you) or cherrypick replacement cost numbers (not you) to either make themselves feel better or just try to annoy others. I don't think I made up any statistics myself, just tried to show the fallacy of how they are (mis)represented here and elsewhere. I think people who are here regularly see through a lot of the hype but new(er) people or the casual visitor such as when someone like you is doing their pre-purchase research can easily get turned off, which IMHO would be a mistake. After all, we both still have our cars, we can't possibly both be wrong, could we? :-)

No. Porsche replaced your engine (if you were lucky), and gave you the middle finger (if you weren't). If Porsche admitted that this item was a wear item, the financial fallout could be disastrous. There will never be a memo from Porsche about the IMS bearing. They've moved on.
If you don't like LN's bearing guidelines, don't follow them. You can still order the OEM bearing if you prefer. The fact that LN and Raby went on to develop "the solution" suggests that the IMS application is a crappy place for a single-row bearing, even if it's a more robust bearing than what was originally used. Yes, LN is (probably) a for-profit organization, but I'm appreciative that we HAVE a fairly robust aftermarket. I have owned cars in the past where the ONLY possible fix is installing a new OEM part - having options is much nicer than having no options.

I thought they were still available (not from Porsche) - but if I'm mistaken, I apologize.
I'm also willing to sell my (slightly used, but otherwise fine) OEM dual-row bearing to any interested parties. $50 shipped.

Point of order, here fellas, but 996pp motioned that this damn thing should be turned into a boobie thread. The motion was duly seconded by Gonzo. Kalashnikov and 5chn3ll both voted in favor. So, as I see it, it's time to put a nail in this thread's coffin. johnireland - nice to have you here in the 996 forum, but please stop with the new IMSB threads. Any new posts in this thread should be off topic and include a boobie pic. I'll start.
