We made it to North Platte, NE yesterday.....OMG the driving conditions were CRAZY! When we crossed the WY border from Utah, I was driving and the roads are treated with salt in Utah, and salt and mostly sand in WY....it was an ice rink for 4 miles! Got off, had breakfast, and then things dried up.

Got a check engine light about 600 miles in and my friend said the car wouldn't start last night, I think if he's right (meaning he didn't have the clutch all the way in), after doing a quick search, I think it could be the clutch switch. Haven't gone out yet today.

750 miles to go! Have a ton of pictures, and will make a post later this week when back home. Such a beautiful drive!

Paul, I like your cool, calm way about this. I could see some people panic like crazy for the CEL and the salt on the roads. It's salt, never mess with the salt!

Enjoy the drive! Pictures, pictures, pictures.

Congrats on pulling the trigger on the Mk I aero. I think it is the best looking 996 variant with the exception of the 996TT. The design has stood the test of time - it just flows well and the GT1/Mk I headlights actually look "right" with the aero package.
Did you get the car started this morning?

Well.....the trip is over! Man, the winds out of the Northwest were HOWLING the whole way home.

Yesterday morning went out to start the car, no issue whatsoever. I did find the driver's side floor mat off the Velcro pads and pushed forward about 3", I figured that was the issue and the clutch pedal didn't go all the way in. However, once during the day, at a gas station, I hopped in the car to start it, put my RIGHT foot on the clutch, turned the key and nothing happened (I was going to jump into the passenger seat after starting it, that's why I didn't get all the way in the car).

Put my left foot on the clutch then, and it started right up. Must of started it another 10 times yesterday.

And when I did start it in the morning of the last day, the check engine light was OFF and stayed off all day. Maybe I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way at one fuel up? Will pull the codes later.

Will write up the story, it's a great one. Talk about some CRAZY weather! The car was a CHAMP! It probably won't be until this weekend. It was SO COOL to drive back, just such beautiful country up to Omaha, Iowa and Illinois are pretty much blah. But I knew that.

Did you leave the key in the ignition while you were fueling? After some period of time (minutes, but I don't know how long) of leaving the key in the ignition, the car will not start. You have to remove it and reinsert it to get the car to start...

I have not researched whether this is an "official" behavior, but it happens consistently with mine.
