Thrown rod means at least one of the heads is probably trashed.
With a $6K roller (once you receive it) and likely not a lot to work with engine wise...I'd look for something closer to home if it were me.
Of course I'm hoping for a $4k roller much closer to home with a better chance of a cheap fix...but I can wait until I find a great deal...or not get a second 996 to work on.

My roller was originally advertised at $8K and the owner would not budge for a month.

I think it was posted yesterday, at least I hadn't seen it before. But, yea, a wad of cash can make people wash their hands of dead weight. It's been in the back of my head since I saw this... I need to look away!

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for something closer to me, but people seem to think that 996s with blown engines are still worth $9k+ around here (Seattle). I'm not in a hurry, so maybe I'll check in with the guy in Utah again if it's still available in a week. I like the car in Utah because it seems to be exactly what I want (996.2, with side skirts, black interior, low-ish miles on the chassis, overall good condition). I'm not too worried about how bad the motor is blown, I won't be needing the M96 anymore when I do find a good car.

Doing an engine swap, but not an LS. Going to keep it in the VW/Audi/Porsche family. Most likely a built 2.7T.

I'd love to have a list of these $9k rollers for later...PM me if you care to share!

This is the only one currently active in the area:
https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/c...651143404.html

I've spoken with the owner and he seems like a cool guy who is clearly very fond of the car; so I think his price is more of a "honey, no one wants to buy the car, I guess I'll just have to get it fixed" type of thing.

That speed yellow is nice!
It would be worth a little more to me, but not $9K for a roller.
I’d go a little over $5k if it were local.
But over $10k once it made it down here to TX would be too much.
I think you’re right.
He priced it so it wouldn’t be very likely to sell.

Just need to go look at it and hopefully the wifey will be there.
You can then mention that the going price is only $3k, but you’re willing to go $3500.
Maybe she will chime in, “Sold!”
