Michael, CONGRATULATIONS!!! I have been following your build thread over on the LS1forum. You have done a fantastic job. I enjoy seeing how meticulous you are. I bought/rebuilt my first 996 after it had an engine fire. My current 996 had a dashboard fire, prior to my purchasing it. I know how exciting it is when your project fires up for the first time. Thanks for documenting your efforts. I am sure that your build thread will serve as a template for future builds.
Thank you also for your service.

""Very cool. But Porsche is a two syllable word. ;-) ""
When I met with my local Porsche President for the first time he informed me of this...
I replied with the notion that every club needs a hillbilly in it...
He laughed and now we always smile when we see each other at get togethers!
PS. Keep working on that build!!!

I don't know if this is possible. Could you turn the intake elbow ~180 deg and use the original intake route through the deck lid? Porsche has drain holes in the bottom of the air cleaner. So even with that you would have some exposure to warm engine compartment air.

Not sure, I'm going to rethink the intake as a future project after I get it drivable.
