Default Another muffler bypass thread

I have listened to various vids, but the audio always sucks.

I have read dozens of threads with mixed reviews.

I'm still thinking about them. As a frame of reference, I used to drive a modded '87 M6 with a Triflo. That sound was heaven.

If anyone knows roughly what sound level I'm talking about, where does the muffler bypass fall vis-a-vis a Triflo?

Thanks!

Dave

This is clearly, the case of the bark is louder than it's bite. It's loud all the time which I'm not sure is the case with Triflo.

Easy way is to just remove the mufflers and see if you like that sound before you actually buy the pipes.

With so many family sedans these days approaching our acceleration times, I for one would be embarrassed if my car sounded like it was working hard while being beaten by a Hyundai. Plus everyone will think you're trying to race them all the time just from the additional noise.

My $.02

Bark is loud that is for sure, its quiet/bearable enough to daily (like I do)...it did take 500 miles to become bearable no doubt about that. Surprisingly I rarely get played with (racers, etc) and cops don't mind (knock on wood). I like to downshift in front of them and 80% of the time the cop won't look up or they'll glance and continue w/e.

Keep in my I live in Metro Detroit where muscle cars are plentiful and loud, Corvettes are like Fusions (I see 10 Vetts a day at least)...exotica is seen often in the nice months etc. So noise laws could be enforced much less than the rest of the country. I actually read the noise law for cars and it truly is subjective there are no DB limits or anything. The only people that get into trouble are cars that clearly shouldn't be loud...ie. ricers and the guys doing burn outs and such.

Around here you get played with even if you drive a stock Porsche by anyone and everyone. The good ones are the thugs that try to race you in their 80's Caddy since they have a v8 under the hood and think they are fast. lol.

Cops around here are real pr!cks too and will pull you over or tail you and profile you for anything. I guess it will depend on your noise tolerance and surroundings. YMMV...

I have been pulled over once because an unmarked cop was tailgating me and I downshifted from 5th to 2nd. That makes quite the noise when you blip the gas on the downshift. I didn't get a ticket.

The droning is there but not that annoying. I'm the kind of guy who has a euro gt3 seat and does lots of autocross and track day stuff though. I don't have any kids. I love the muffler bypass and think it's criminal that there are 911s out there not enjoying the ruckus these cars can make. High revs under power are amazing.

I have some good mics; I should make a video.

Well I attempted to record the car using the laptop / firewire audio input / shure sm57 today. It "worked" but the interference caused by what I'm assuming is the alternator basically drowns out the actual audio. So if anyone would like a really long track of variable-pitched buzzing/whining noises, let me know.

Knfeparty Agreed. A Porsche Flat-6 under power and a Ferrari v8 or v12 screaming are IMO some of the best sounding machines ever. I also really love the way crotch rockets (still called that? ) sound with little to no mufflers. Almost F1 car pitch.

I like f1 style sound too more than the traditional boxer note. I know not everyone agrees with this though. Here's a big boner for you...
To me it's amazing how they could pull off that pitch from a Lamborghini 12 cylinder.

Thanks for the replies. So far nothing makes me NOT want to do it

I have fond memories of screaming down a certain tunnel headed into downtown DC in the M6 and I miss that sound!

Best advice is to find someone local who has done it, and listen in person

I think it's one of those things that would be attractive at first, but would become less so over time.

Whether it became annoying enough to go back to a muffled exhaust would depend on the driver, their frequent passengers, and your local law enforcement's tolerance.

Alp that clip has given me countless boners in the past 8 years. I have been trying to achieve somewhat similar muffler sound from a flat six which I know is almost impossible. But my next project is to gut my original mufflers and see what that will sound like.

You are reading my mind, that is exactly what I'm doing.

Primarily because I'm going to put on my cat bypass again and would rather have a gutted muffler than to clog up the internal baffling of my Tubi's with carbon.
