Wondering if....
If our beloved 996's ever start to appreciate in value what are your predictions on when will it happen and why? (And not talking GT2s and 3s, in my opinion those are already classics in the making)
I think they've hit rock bottom now. My prediction is that we'll start to see them hold value for a while. I don't know when we might see values start to increase though.
This is all based on my scientific formula of "it's a low mileage Porsche selling in the teens." I can't imagine them any cheaper!
I recently bet a little over $20k on it!
If I drive it for a while and it just loses value, at least I'm enjoying the ride!

29 years, 6 months, 3 days, 8 hours and 29 minutes from right now they will all begin to appreciate in value. Why? Because even 914s are now appreciating in value and they came along 30 years before our cars(1969).

The only reason I'm shopping a 996 is because of the depressed prices. The market is pretty efficient(not perfectly, so don't start that argument). You get a 996 for a good price, but make up for it along the ownership way with IMSB, RMS, AOS, radiator, water pump, axle boots, valve job, etc. Lets face facts, Porsche did not exactly cover themselves in glory with the 996/Boxster engine(s). Kind of like what they did with the Porsche Flug Motor, which was an unmitigated disaster.
I think we are getting to the nadir soon. There is prolly still some down side on the car but well maintained ones, and the group that has the new IMS, RMS and AOS will be worth more than the ones that are ticking time bombs. Even if they aren't time bombs, they are time bombs.
I hope I hit it near bottom and get one that stays near my purchase point. There's no question you get a lot of car for the money these days, but the continuing maintenance can be -- breathtaking.

I think that the 996 will start to go up in value. The mk1 will go up first as they are the first of the watercooled cars. Then the mk2 will follow. The 996s have character and simplicity that the newest cars do not have. Not to mention that their styling is aging very well.

E36 m3 can be had $10-15k. If that's the appreciation in value we're talking about here, I agree.
Also, not sure how the first water cooled matter. Usually it's the last that matters like the air-cooled 993. I really hope I am wrong though.

I can't really see them going up in value. Far too many of them on the market. But, they may well hold value in terms of little more depreciation. After all, 996s are sandwiched between two version that are currently more expensive (993 and 997). That should help hold their value.

Seriously though if history is any indication, the value of the 996 will only go up after all the college kids get a hold of them, modify them, and wreck them. And then some magazines write an article on how great used cars these are. Only after that will we see any noticeable increases IMO. It's happened on several "cult" cars already. "Classic" cars are a different story however...
I can't imagine values on 996's going much lower... there is a yellow 996 in great shape for sale near me... asking price $13k.
How much lower could it go? I don't think we'd see sub-$10k 996's, unless they were in horrible shape.

I agree for a diff reason - M96 engine rebuild is $10-$15k and a used engine is $7-10k and I don't see these numbers going lower anytime soon. The car should be worth at least a used engine. But still that doesn't mean our car will appreciate in values like the 993's that are $35-$50k.
