Besides being mid engine vs rear engine, rear seat vs no rear seat, etc...
What made YOU choose a 911 over a Boxster? Tradition? Looks? Speed?
Just curious to see what you all have to say...

Like Ralphie famously said: "The Boxster is a Porsche with panties"....
In all seriousness, they are great as well. With kids the rear seats in my 996 get a lot more use than you'd think and I like having a solid roof along with the fact that I always wanted a 911 since I was a kid. I could see a Boxster sharing garage space one day though. Having the engine RIGHT behind you on a nice day with the top down in a Boxster makes for a very fun driving experience.

The Boxster is a terrific car, wonderful balance, and incredibly forgiving if you drive it wrong. The 911, even though it has been tamed over the generations, is a different animal. How you drive one is significantly different than the other. Example: lifting throttle during a turn. Boxster: helps if you overcooked the corner and need to fix understeer. Do the same in a 911, and you'll be watching the rear end of your own car go sailing by. The 911 squats down when you nail the throttle from a stop, digs in, and takes off; Boxster jumps away with some tire hop. The Boxster is a dream through a slalom; the 911 adds its own dynamics to a slalom, with the pendulum effect building all the way, trying its best to buck you off.
I love both cars. Driving the Boxster is a drive in one of the best roadsters made; driving the 911 is like driving an awesome history book about car design.
The underlying joy of the 911 is Porsche's obstinant refusal to make the 911 mid-engine, and the engineering wizardry done over the past 50 years to make what ought to be undriveable one of the most fun cars to drive...ever.

Finally she heard the pathetic excuse for an exhaust note and that was the end of it.
I really should have kept my mouth shut and saved $50k

Owning 5 986 Boxsters and a 996, I buy/drive Boxsters because they are 90% of the 996 for 60% of the price. Being mid-engine, The Boxster is more neutral in handling (not prone to swap the tail), and doesn't have the silly half-assed back seat most 911 owners use to haul picnic baskets, wine bottles, kids and their wives purse.
From the doors forward they are the same (99%) car. Like PW says, a Boxster actually looks good with the top down. And if you need a hardtop, they are easy to do.
The 3.2L Boxster puts out 250 horses vs the 300 horses of the 996.
At the end of the day, when you quit comparing 911's and porcupines, and Boxsters and hairdressers, they are both fantastic cars. In my garage, they will always share side/side garage space.
