With an after market rear turbo style bumper, is the difference negligible? Not talking performance, solely aesthetics. See pic.

The C4S is about 2.4 inches wider than the C2 at the rear fender flare. The visual appeal makes that appear much greater in person. Of course, there is much more than just a wider rear end to the C4S. It's a very striking car. Everything about it the design seems to flow very well.

You can really see how much lower the C4S sits in that photo (assuming stock suspension in each car).

P.S. 2.4 inches IMHO is "neglible" (I have a C2 and it is already a FAT BUTT enough for me) but I will gladly take 2.4 inches LONGER in a specific part of my anatomy anyday...but then I digress

I am really surprised that no one ever did an aftermarket retrofit of the rear deck reflector. That is what makes the 996 C4S appear wider. Blasphemy perhaps, but I think people would buy it. The 996 C4S is still my fav looking Porsche.

I wouldn't call it insecurity, because I love my 996. But, do I wish I had bought a C4S or a turbo? You betcha. So maybe a little wide body envy!

A C4S decklid retrofit is possible for a C2, but it's a major PITA. It requires significant trimming of the decklid for width and length along with appropriate priming and painting. Even then, the reflector won't properly line up with the narrow body tail lights. Not worth the cost and effort...

The mod would be on the C2 decklid to align with the lights, or a fibreglass one...not the C4S decklid. Still not worth the cost and effort, but that doesn't always matter. . Maybe slap on some tape...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Many, many people would disagree with you. However, if you're one of the people who doesn't like it, then don't buy one! Everything works out in the end...
