i used fishing line when strap broke on wife's boxster- didn't know about the hanger on the door either-
just went out to my 07 997 to ck out the door hanger thingy & discovered my strap was broken right at cap- drilled small hole in cap to reinsert strap & secured it-
Yes. It's similar to those tags on pillows. If you remove it, there are severe penalties.
Hahaha! I really don't see the point of the tether. I mean, if you drove off without putting the cap back on and you have a tether, you still risk spilling gasoline all over the highway, plus you're going to have a bunch of scratches/dings from the cap banging against the fender. If you don't have a tether, you're going to figure it out eventually and go back to the gas station where you last filled up. Now, if you leave the gas cap behind and you're on a 400 mile trip, well, then you've got a bit of a problem.
I like the tether. It does a nice job of keeping the cap near the rest of the car. The only negative I see is that it adds weight, but not very much.
Did someone really complain that it was too expensive? Or was that the 50 cent pin that holds it in place? Blimey. Hmmm, wonder what a Porsche dealer would charge to replace it?
With a 2012 Honda CR-V parked next to the Cayman I checked compatibility of the Honda fuel cap: 100%.
Same thread, but the seal is against the inside of the neck, and not the top like the Porsche.
The outer flange on the cap sits just like the Porsche, and the quality of the molding is comparable.
No Check Engine Light, and the tether securing tag even fits in an alternate hole on the Cayman:
The only issue is the new Honda part appears to be twice the price of the new Porsche part.
So, no real reason not to use the OEM, except perhaps the Honda uses a very flexible synthetic rubber tether, and the Porsche uses that hard plastic that will likely again break...
I've ordered the OEM Porsche cap regardless.
Pity that fake aluminum one is just plastic.

And here I thought it was just supposed to hang over the fill cap cover. (Which I thought was awfully tacky)

If you eliminate the tether you now have a lightweight 996... save .0000000002 lbs.
Seriously tough, mine broke and I replaced it for like $13 for an OEM part. Although I kind of liked it better without. Less chance of scratching the side of your car even when using the hanger.

Amazon shipped OEM Porsche part to my door in one week from heck knows where, and it literally takes ten seconds to refit.
The new one incidentially uses s synthetic rubber, like the Honda, and not plastic.
Possibly last longer, though at USD20 or less for ten years' service, there's not a lot to complain about.
Unless of course you bought an 'aluminum look' plastic one...
Anyone know what that slot is for? center top right. I don't have a hook to put the tether strap into so it just hangs into the wheel well opening when filling up. Pictures I've found online are just like mine. Looks like it may be for another locking pin to slide into. Boxster maybe?
My 996.2 has an illustration that shows what our hook is for.
I was wondering how y'all didn't know it was there.
Now I know they all don't have the illustration.
I have the aluminum look gas cap.
I picked it up cheap (used) last summer from the Rennlist Classifieds.
It has a rubber tether.

The strap that stops the fuel tank cap from falling on the round has snapped. Is this something that can be done by "us" or is some weird and wonderful Porsche tool required to fix it?
It looks to be retained somehow in the hinge???????
