Fuel cap retaining strap
The strap that stops the fuel tank cap from falling on the round has snapped. Is this something that can be done by "us" or is some weird and wonderful Porsche tool required to fix it?
It looks to be retained somehow in the hinge??????? |
Buy a new cap.
The "strap" is known to break. It is attached to the car's body by one screw. |

The "pop rivet" is actually a Push Pin Rivet. Use a small screwdriver or a pointy pick and then push the middle of the rivet. The pin in the middle will move in allowing you to easily remove the broken strap.
once out it has tapered prongs that snap into the fastening hole and tighten to hold as the pin is pushed back in. |
My strap's broken too, but I don't think I want to spend $22 on it.
I noticed that the Amazon seller in the link above is TC's Garage. I know the owner of TC's Garage well. Very active in PCA and a great guy. Give him a call (Tom Gould). Maybe he can beat the price via the Amazon listing, since he won't have to pay Amazon. Contact info: 1315 Hot Springs Way #105, Vista, CA 92081 (760) 295-3330 |

I really like keeping every little thing perfect on my Porsche. Just seems right. Plus the tether lets you hang the gas cap from the lid, no scratched paint, no lost gas cap...just Porsche coolness
I do love the Porsche aluminum gas caps. Spendy...but pretty...But have been told from several sources they don't work well on 996. The cap breather hole gets blocked causing CEL. Here are a set of all aluminum not the plastic ones. gorgeous. http://www.maxspeed-motorsports.com/..._Gas_Cap_.html |
I'll be damned......
I never knew the gas cap strap had a hanger on the filler lid, I just let it dangle !! I sure wish I could justify buying the aluminium cap, but $140 + delivery to Australia is a little rich for me.... |

I have the aluminum "look" cap. Yes... its actually plastic!
Never had a CEL in 5 years with regards to the cap. The cap in the above photo is not a Porsche cap but an aftermarket "Petroleum" cap? |
Funny story: I was filling up at a gas station and there were 3 dudes admiring my car and 2 hawt chicks. They were looking at everything I was doing as its not too often you see people putting gas in through their front fender. Just when I took off the cap, the strap broke and me not realizing it, dropped the cap. I know they all saw the strap breaking. That was a hilarious and embarrassing moment. At that time, they probably decided they wouldn't be buying a Porsche without even knowing about the IXX. Lol

Mine is a 99 job and doesn't have the restraining strap. It probably broke before I got the car. So I leave it next to the window wiper. IT says in English and German on the cap. "Turn to click".

Does anyone know where you can get the cable strap for the aluminum one?
I have that cap but no cable and I end up putting the cap on my wipers every time I fill up |
maxspeed one is aftermarket
I think the oem one looks better...It's one of those stupid little things that I like... it's plastic but peeerty http://www.suncoastparts.com/product...ode=996AirFuel |
I think you have to make the strap out of wire cable
