Default OBD error code, advice please

I got a check engine light yesterday and as it turns out, my durametric (clone) cable just gives me a red light so I can't connect it. But I picked up a code reader from Harbor Freight today.

I get the following codes:

P0102
P0446

Any idea on where to start? Anyone experienced these? The car starts and runs like it always did

leave car or drive car while figuring this out?

P0102 is MAF. Check MAF connection http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...ank-vent-leak/
p0446 is evap canister purge valve http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic...-car-shutdown/

I suggest resetting the codes and wait for the CEL to come on again and rescan it, preferably by Durametric or alike.

Thanks Ahsai, I'll reset the codes and see what happens.

Your code reader told you where to look. Is the engine hard to start sometimes?

It has in fact been hard to start sometimes. Cranks a few extra times before starting and occasionally it doesn't start and I have to wait a minute to try again.

I was hoping there might be something I could check before digging it to procedure Porsche recommended for this OBD code.

Here's what the Porsche OBD manual says. Just dig into it I guess? Can I get around not having the special tool?

P0102

P0446

Don't over-complicate this. Clean the MAF first and see if codes return; if it returns replace the MAF. Replace the evap canister vent valve.

You can check the MAF reading using Durametric or a generic OBDII scanner that reads sensor values in real-time. At idle full warmed up it should read about 15-17kg/hr. At 3k rpm, it should be around 60-80kg/hr.

Ahsai

I'll check the live values when I have the car all warmed up. Here's what it reads at cold idle. The idle is between 803 and 837 rpm.

When engine is not fully warmed up, the idle will be higher so it's hard to use as a baseline. As long as your numbers are fine for a fully warmed up engine, you should be fine.

The numbers I posted were for normal warned up idle, which is about 700rpm. You cold idle is higher hence also higher MAF reading. Higher rpm sucks in more air.

Um, your warmed up idle is WAY high. It should be around 700rpm. What year is your car? I wonder if you have some air leak.

6.45 g/s sounds quite high for 822 rpm. It should be about 3.8 at 700rpm and goes up linearly off idle.

Check the purge canister valve, my bet is it is stuck open. Mine was like that and it caused hard warm start, high idle and a few other small problems. If yours is like my '99, this valve is left to the throttle body. Remove it, clean it, cycle it a few times with a cordless drill battery, blow in it to see if its working. If it does, re install it.

Just realized that the AC was on. I always have it on. Let me check again tomorrow. Warm it up and idle without AC.

It's a 99 C2

My warm idle without AC is between 700 and 715 and 4.09 g/s
