Yup. You lose 3% - 4% of your horsepower per 1,000 feet of elevation with a normally aspirated engine. I live at about 7,200 feet.
As I mentioned, the supercharged Audi SQ5 we just bought feels like a rocket ship compared to the 996.

Honestly, I'd have sworn that I had seen 0-60 numbers in the high 4s for the original Cayenne Turbo just like you suggest, but I looked for them and couldn't find them. Did we imagine that or something?
It sure seems like the C2 should be quicker, but the 1/4 mile time is "around" 13.0 at 105mph, while the CTT is "around" 14.0 at 100mph (which seems damn slow for ANY 450hp vehicle).
If you find something different, let me know. I had always talked myself into a Cayenne Turbo by telling myself that it was an SUV that was faster than my 996, and if I find out that I'm wrong I might save myself some money.

The 1st generation Cayenne Turbo had 450 PS (331 kW), and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.3 seconds.
911 Carrera 320 PS (235 kW) @ 6800 rpm, 3.6L wet-sump 4.9 s 178 mph (286 km/h)
911 Carrera 4S 320 PS (235 kW) @ 6800 rpm, 3.6L wet-sump 5.0 s 174 mph (280 km/h)
911 "40 Jahre" 345 PS (254 kW) @ 6800 rpm, 3.6L wet-sump 4.8 s 180 mph (290 km/h)
911 Targa 320 PS (235 kW) @ 6800 rpm, 3.6L wet-sump 5.2 s 174 mph (280 km/h)

Dumbass thread is dumbass.
Potatoe.
OP, if you wanted a drag car, buy a solid chassis supercharged V-8 example from Detroit and drive between red lights. If you are dumb enough to stage up your 996 at lights you may very well get owned, by a lot of different cars.
Pro tip: the 996 isn't a dragster, it has capable pull, but driven correctly will own the corners...not the straights.

In my opinion this is a very beautiful model, especially aesthetically, I personally have owned several different character cars, but none of them makes the drive as an occasion. For me, even just looking at the car stationary feels exciting, for the money it costs there are a ton of beemers that can be lowered boosted etc etc to make it a rocket, but that is gone for me 300hp seems more than plenty but the occasion factor is the most important for me, I recently sold my e46 m3 convertible, pretty quick and good car, but although it is an M it is still a just a beemer...

you need to educate yourself. You to make alot of off the shelf comments with no research and little knowledge on the subject.

Get you a Mustang with a big assed motor if you want straightline. Me, I enjoyed keeping up with the aforementioned Mustang through the roudabouts because he kept breaking the rears loose at every exit.
I stayed hooked up and hung with him. But who cares? 911 ownership is about being "in the club". I got on the interstate today with a 911SC and we ran hard a bit before he exited with a thumbsup and a smile.
THAT is what this is about. That and pulling tail...

You know, there is just a little TOO much "Porsche's aren't meant to go fast in a straight line" crap going on around here. Sure, they're not dragsters, but they aren't Delta 88's either. My 911 goes quite nicely in a straight line, and it goes around corners too. Pretty cool...
I smell a hint of BS on the wind whenever the explanations start flying about why cars with <5s 0-60 times aren't designed to go fast in a straight line...

I owned (for 7 months) a modified 2005 C6 Corvette 525hp. It would absolutely destroy my car thru the 1/4 mile. But my 996 is such a better car in every way. My son just picked up a new WRX the other day that's a bit quicker than my car. Maybe I'm showing my age and the boy racer in me is gone but I don't even car if my neighbors Camry was quicker. I love my 996 for the complete package that it is.

I agree that buying a 996 for straightaways is a bad idea and can be disappointing but overall the drive feel and enjoyment outweighs all of that. Hell, my nephew kept asking me to buy an Lancer EVO - probably faster - but that's just not me.

I used to have a 1988 VW Jetta GL. I autocrossed it a lot back in the early 90's. I did reasonably well in the Northeast SCCA. One time a couple of guys who just showed up at an event at Nassau Colisiem in NY were perplexed why my Jetta was faster around the course than their IROC-Z.
It's not all about 0-60, it's what the car can do.
With the new technology today, many cars/SUV's/station wagons can pull 0-60 times of less than 6 seconds (a 2011 A6 Avant is supposedly 6.0 - not an S, RS, just a regular family wagon).

I jumped onto a freeway a couple of years ago and floored right it out of the hole (just for some occasional fun, I'm normally a grampa out there), but, unbeknownst to me in the dark of the evening, an STI decided to jump me - his unmistakeable headlights glaring at me in my rearview mirror. I saw the red mist (I know...I know...bad), and stayed in it well past 125mph, before I realized I should back off before I get caught. Well, guess what? Mr. STI slowly receded in my mirrors, but stayed in the fight. After I backed out, he did so as well, and coasted by me with a sheepish grin, and moved on. It was definitely an STI, btw.
At least ONE STI driver was caught off guard by a NA 996.

I guess it depends on the track. I was surprised to see some comments about a fellow autocrosser on this forum (albeit a long time ago): https://rennlist.com/forums/autocros...roll-call.html
I was in Mark Daddio's IROC-Z limited option Camaro - no sunroof, fog lamps, a/c, and several other things. Very fun car.
Also the Kozlak's were very competitive in an IROC.
I also used to race in my friend's Mustang LX 5.0 (late 80's). It was set up for autocrossing and placed high nationally (although not as high as Daddio and the Kozlak's).
