Engine number
Hi folks..,
Just had a look yesterday and discovered my engine number
The number is M96/0466y11823
Porsche 911 2000 C4
My question is...is this the original engine (on my car) and what kind of bearing it used? i mean single or duel row ball bearing
Thanks
Robert

My understanding is that there would be an AT in the serial number if it was a remanufactured replacement engine from Porsche. For example, mine is M96/01AT66X65297. Dual rows were in the 99 and I believe most 2000 model years, others here on the forum can probably narrow that down.

Single vs. Double-inspection req'd.
Reputable literature says Porsche engine production changed from double row IMS bearings to single row during the 2001 build year. But no engine number, VIN, or build date data exists to confirm which bearing a 2001 may have. Only a direct eyeball inspection by a skilled tech of the IMS area can determine such things.
If, if, if...your 2000 has its original engine and IMS bearing, meaning it is not a reman. engine, then it should have the double row IMS bearing.
Sorry for the equivocation above, but Porsche NA refuses to clarify many of the unknowns associated with the IMS failures.
