996 window drop problems
Hello all,
sorry about yet another window drop post but with a slight difference that i have already done the usual fixes !!!
problem:
window does not drop when entering or exiting the passenger door.
works done so far:
1,replaced the outer handle micro switch. brand new.
2,replaced the inner handle inc micro switch, second hand.
3,replaced the window motor, second hand (apparently tested )
4,replaced the lock unit, second hand (apparently tested )
pulling my hair out now as costing quite a bit.
fed up also, so if no one has any ideas for me i wounder if i can adjust window so it doesnt go right to top and hit when closing.
Thankyou for any advice people.

Briefly, when the outside or inside handle is pulled even if the door is not opened the window should drop. If the handle is released without opening the door the door latch signals the door is closed so the window should go up again.
If the handle is pulled and the door opened the window should stay down. If it doesn't this can be a problem with the door latch or the door lock assembly. (In the case of my Boxster in one instance it was the door lock assembly. Not only would the window sometimes not drop when the door was opened sometimes while the window would drop just like it was supposed to when the door was opened the window would go back up after the door was opened. On the driver's side door the door lock assembly was ok the door latch was bad.)
If the window makes a feeble act of dropping or doesn't lower or raise smoothly, or shifts or rocks going down or up this is a sign the window regulator is bad. (A window on my Boxster was just twitching a bit when I opened the door and the tech replaced the regulator. He told me when he removed the old one it just fell apart, it was worn out.)
You can try resetting the window limits. This should be covered in the owners manual. IIRC turn the key to the on position. With the window all the way up press and hold the lower button until the window is all the way down. Release the button. Then press and hold the raise button until the window is all the way up and continue to hold the button for 5 (or is it 10?) seconds. Then release the button.
Repeat this process for the other window. If after this the windows still do not appear to work right my WAG would be the regulators are bad, probably worn out.

Hello Mr Macster.
Thanks for your imput.
my window runs smooth from the window switch, so assumed regulator was ok? question, if a micro switch was faulty on outside handle would it still work fine from the inside? not that mine is lol, mine is dead from both in and out.
you referred to the fact your lock assembly was ok, but latch was bad??? i have replaced the complete unit in the door which connects outer handle, inner handle via cable, and incorporates the bit (latch?) that hooks onto post in door jam.
does that cover both lock assembly and latch or am i missing something?
cheers

Does it make any effort to drop when you pull the handle? Even a hint of noise that the motor is engaging?
95% of the time, the problem is the regulator stretching out, but you'd hear/feel the motor briefly activating. You've already replaced the other possible issue, that being the microswitch.

The window regulator cables stretch out with time and use, and eventually they are unable to lower the window to allow the door to open properly. The switches tell the motor to drop the window when you pull the handle. The motor tries, but all it does is take up the slack in the cable.
You can usually tell if the regulator is bad if you can push the window down manually when the door is open. If you close the door and the window goes back up, then this is probably your issue.
It's a fairly simply DIY repair.

???? like the open thinking tho guys

Do you have access to a service manual? You're at the point where I'd be tracing wiring diagrams, rather than swapping parts.
First check to make sure you're got power at both micro-switches and that they're sending a signal when activated by the handles, then go from there.

It's a very common repair for the 996. Both of my regulators have been replaced.

ao mine does this. I’ve replaced the regulator. If I kinda push my window down and then close the door the window goes up. When I pull my door handle you can hear the motor working. What I did notice is when I had the motor out there was some play in the gear the spins to move the window. Is it normal to spin freely bout a quarter turn? I would think not.
