Default Attn spin-on filter adapter users...

Following LN Engineering's recommendations, the filter needs to be changed more often than the oil.

Anyone using the spin-on adapter: approx. how much oil is lost when replacing a spin-on filter? I'm assuming the experience will be similar to changing one of the cartridges, but I want to ensure that I don't wind up with 9 quarts of oil on the floor...

Do you mean just replacing the filter or doing the whole oil change? I just got a 996 the first thing I did was change the oil, it had a spin on adapter on it. I got more than 9 quarts out.

Depends on which spin-on filter you use but none hold as much as the OEM "cup" so you shouldn't have more than 1/2 qt.
Good quality filter, (K&N, Wix, Mobil 1,etc.) should last 10,K miles so I just change mine at 5,K miles with the oil.

Thanks, Byprodriver. Pcargo, I was asking about the oil lost when replacing the spin-on filter, not an entire oil change.

OP said that LN recommends changing filter more often than oil. Wanted to know how many ounces of oil are needed to top off. My guess is that the guys at LN being overly cautious feel the need to inspect your filter more regularly than every 5k. Cheap insurance.

A ½ quart would be my estimation as well.

It's because the adapter eliminates the bypass in case the filter becomes clogged enough to block oil flow. Highly unlikely unless there is a major engine failure in progress. This insures the oil is filtered under any condition, but it is not idiot proof. In any event I prefer any foreign material be contained in the filter instead of bypassed throughout the engine via the oil.

---definitely worth the time & $ if you're a DIY--especially if the oil starts turning a dark color no matter when it was last changed
