Default pulling the steering wheel on a 996

The turn signals were not cancelling out so I bought the ring around the wheel to fix that for a mere $300. Went out to pull off the wheel, disconnected the battery, then started prying on the horn cover. I have pulled wheels on a 944's, 914's,a nearly 911's but none had that little logo that said:
AIR BAG

Any precautions here? How to proceed?

There are two screws that need to come out of the back of the wheel (left and right sides, between the spokes). If I remember right, they are 5mm Allen head screws. Once these are loose, you can just pull the airbag forward. There will be one or two yellow electrical connectors for the airbag that you will need to disconnect. Conventional wisdom is to disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting the airbag.

There are allen/torx bolts that hold the airbag unit in place - you get to them from the back side of the wheel.

Make sure the battery is disconnected and there is no power in the system (step on the brakes for 30 seconds). The airbag connectors are very straightforward - just make sure the battery stays disconnected so you (a) don't get blowed up, and (b) don't have to reset the airbag light.

One more reco is make sure you have the right bits (right size and shape) for those bolts at the back of the steering wheel and make sure the bit is seated tightly before you try to break the bolts loose. It will be a whole diff project if these bolts are stripped.

^ The man with two arms speaks much truth.

Once the airbag is out of the way, it's both obvious and easy to remove the wheel.

Thanks for all the input, just got back from Lowes because I don't have the right Torx screw driver size. Yanking on an armed airbag did not seem like a good idea.

ya you will want to make sure that the torx is set in there properly for sure. turned out mine had 2 different sizes so the 30 didnt fit too well in the 27. took a lot of frustration and f bombs to figure that one out!
one other tip that i think is understated in the vid (which i used and it is awesome) is to be sure to mark the position of the steering wheel in relation to the shaft when the wheel is almost off the shaft. im out about 5 degrees because i didnt mark it properly, so need to eventually reposition it when i get motivied to pull the wheel off again!
other than that...its a pretty logical re and re.

Those torx screws are also in there pretty tight, and in an awkward location. Turn the wheel about 1/4 turn and it will be easier. Check the horn bushings while you are in there.

This tip should be added to the video because you can't get to the holes otherwise.

I bought the same stalk and have to change mine soon. It's been on my table for months. Let me know how it goes...

+1 to this!

Mine where so tight I had to buy an impact torx bit set from harbor freight and use a breaker bar to get them loose.

Make sure you extend the steering column all the way out. And if removing the steering wheel, leave the main nut 2-3 threads on the shaft while yanking off the steering wheel. Otherwise it will poke you in the face real hard when it finally gives. Good luck!

That got done with no major problems. You have to love those little black screws on a black interior with black rugs.
Next up the leaking expansion tank.

In the video they show a 3 stalk replacement, mine had 4 stalks. When you put the fascia covering the steering wheel back together the black double rubber donuts need to go back the way the came out because they are eccentric in shape.

I had to take mine apart when doing a trial fit because the turn signal needs the bigger hole to work!!! I had the rubber donuts inverted. Not a huge deal because I was getting good at putting it back together but something not covered in the video.
