Default Broken Porsche

My 2004 carrera 4s stalled behind a red light. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with it? Gas tank was full and it stalled without making any sounds. BTW, it has 77K on it and is manual.

Well, based on your description this is very easy to diagnose. Since you said red light and no noises, and gas tank was full...I would say your muffler bearing failed. No other possibility here.

On the serious note, you need to provide a lot more information about the car's condition. Did you try to start it? Did it turn over? Was starter engaging? What was volt meter reading? Did you try to push start it? Did anything smell bad? Did any fluids leak? Is the car your daily driver or did you just take it out? Any deferred maintenance?

It probably needs someone who can drive to sit behind the wheel. That tends to stop an engine from stalling.

Gentlemen, this is a very serious question ... this 911 is STALLED, STALLED I say! At a red light no less! I suggest checking the halogen fluid levels and replacing the prop wash.

The problem is the nut behind the wheel. Replace it and report back.

Do you have option code P3911? It automatically shuts off the engine when parked up on a wire, such as behind a red light.

Tough crowd here.

More info needed as others said. Also you can guess by now that you need thick skin to hang out here sometimes.

Did it happen only once or are you still driving it? Was it towed to a mechanic or dealer? Was there any work done on it recently?

Obviously the IMS bearing failed...happens all the time under these exact circumstances...

A otherwise uneventful stall and then a crank followed by no start is very suggestive of a fuel problem, either a bad relay or fuse or pump.

If the engine stalled and then there was no cranking this can be a bad ignition switch or possibly -- if a manual -- a bad clutch interlock switch.

Getting the car flat bedded to a qualified shop should have the cause diagnosed.

An engine just stalling could be a clogged fuel filter. That is a bit unlikely. You get clogged fuel filters usually in older cars that have gunk in their gas tanks. It is not impossible however. I would check the fuel filter first.

I assume it started up again, right? Another possibility is some kind of quirk in the engine electronics. These cars seem to be prone to all kinds of gremlins in their electronics. Your engine computer could have just shut it off for no reason.

Here is the $60 question, when it restarted did it run well at the proper temperature and oil pressure and with the expected amount of power? If so, then it has to be your fuel filter or some kind of electronic glitch. If it were something mechanical, it would have never started up and ran fine. Valves and fuel injectors and such just break. They don't generally take a moment off only to return to working properly. It is electronics that will lose connection or malfunction and then magically return to working normally.

Only 3 things keep an engine running, spark fuel and air (there's ECU variable too) If the fuel pump didn't quit, and world didn't run out of air, sounds like misfire at idle stalled the car.

Look for codes, check the plugs and coils. Has it stalled before? Assuming your sitting, car in neutral not moving at idle goin nowhere and bam dies?

King James, fuel pump is a good suggestion too. In most cars they just die. Hard to see the car restarting if the fuel pump was bad.
