Default Potential Buy - 2002 996

So I've been hunting a 964 for the past few months but haven't been able to nail down the owner to do a PPI. I love the car and driving it was amazing, but what worries me that there's a fair amount cosmetically wrong with the car and parts are impossible to find and insanely expensive.

996's don't seem to share that problem, although have the well documented problems of their own.

So a guy reached out to me and is offering to sell his 2002 996 (newer style with cupholders!, 3.6L engine, etc) for 17K. Has 100K miles.

Below is his background on the car:

"I have regular oil change every 4,000 miles with Synthetic oil change. I don't know if the IMS got changed or not, as the dealer where i got the car from did not tell me. The dealer said the the original owner was a lady, then i'm the second owner. It was well maintained, as you can see from the conditions of the car. The car has minor slips between the gears, but i'm still able to drive it to work. When i don't step on the gas very hard suddenly, the clutch and gear seems to be fine and drives like a regular car. If i feed the gas pedal gradually, the car still goes fast. But eventually i think the pressure plate/fly wheel will need replacement if you want to maximize the 911's performance. It just started slipping about 3 weeks ago. I'm looking to sale the car as we got an SUV for the baby. The car is clean title...i have an old carfax from a while back, but not a recent one. You can pull a new carfax. I can give you the VIN later if you need it."

I figure that if I replace the clutch, flywheel, and IMS/RMS all together I should be looking at about $5K in parts and labor based on what I've read on the forums.

I guess the question is if this guys is willing to deal, does it seem a reasonable ask at 17K and be all into an IMS/RMS new clutch/flywheel 2002 996 for the low 20K's?

Make him fix the clutch and add it to the price. It sounds like it is but it would suck if you bought the car and needed to rebuild the trans.

Decent price, maybe can negotiate based on the slipping clutch. Should be able to get an independent shop to do the clutch/IMS/RMS for around $2500.

I'd try to get the owner down even more than $17k. High miler with slipping clutch doesn't leave him many options! Straight side Carrera with $5k in maintenance pending is enticing at $12 to $14 range. If you do all that work you will have peace of mind for a long time, so only do this if you plan to keep the car till it dies. You should think about replacing water pump, low T thermostat and AOS at same time. Add another $1500 to $2000 with labor.

I really would love to do the work myself, but don't have any of the proper tools or really space to do so - I mean I need to borrow my parent's jack to do an oil change on my BMW!

Isn't the LN bearing itself like $700? You think I would be able to get the whole kit and kaboodle ( water pump, thermostat and AOS for around 5K?

My worry about having him do it is 1. He's going to be incented to find the cheapest guy and 2. I won't have any control over what other things get done while the mechnic is down there.

Honestly I would love to do the work myself, but I'm just not equipped to do it currently. Maybe if I spent $5K getting the necessary things and a couple extra for the divorce that would happen, I might swing it...

You could get a PPI done to make sure there was nothing else wrong other than the clutch, if that's the case that's NOT a bad price.

If you can get a PPI, I would diffenetly get a compression test, maybe not a leakdown, but at least that.

You should be able to get all of that done for about 5k at an indie.

No kidding, and you get to keep the tools afterwards

The guy said he would send me over the history today, but haven't heard from him. He says he bought it from a dealership which I assume is a good sign as I think the records will probably be more complete than otherwise.

I may go see it this weekend if he gets back to me. I'll let you guys know how that goes and whether we can come to some sort of agreement. Still love the 964, but when faced with the prospect of trying to fix fundamental issues like a broken convertible top that will not only cost a ton but also be hard to source parts for I get less enthusiastic...

Saw it, but didn't drive it, this morning. Car is really clean inside and outside. Guy has 4 cars (Range Rover, customized with 22" and lowered, kind of drug dealer looking, a Z4 that his wife drives and something else), is a natural gas engineer and seems to not have a problem spending some money on his cars.

I peeked inside the engine bay and it's really clean. Like almost spotless. He has the two original keys and all the manuals and stuff. As far as I can tell, no previous records.

Woman owned from 0-88K, he bought from a dealer @ 88k, currently has 104K, which was driven over 16 months of his ownership.

I think I may see if I can pick it up for 3-4K less than his ask and plow that right back into doing the clutch/IMS/RMS.
