Default Front Differential problem?

A friend with a 2006 Tiptronic has a mid-pitch noise coming from the front end of his car. The noise gets louder with speed. Wheel bearings have been checked. Is there a way to definitively diagnose a problem with the front diff?

That question should be posted on the 997 forum. The 996 utilizes a mechanical AWD system with a viscous coupling. The 997 utilizes a computer controlled, electronic AWD system. I don't know how the 997 differential compares to the 996 differential.

FWIW, my front diff started making noise before it failed. It started as a subtle gear whine and eventually became louder, almost sounding like a slipping belt. Eventually it began to leak just prior to having it rebuilt.

There are bearings on the side of the diff where the half shafts hook up. I had one go bad. Made more noise when turning though.

It was only the later 997's (post 2010?) that didn't use the mostly NON-FUNCTIONAL VC system.

I thought the 997.1 was computer controlled. It was a viscous coupling also?
