Preventive Maintenance - Finally!

Preventive Maintenance - Finally!
After 10 years of mostly trouble free driving I decided to make a sizable "investment" in preventive maintenance and get all the updates and little repairs done to keep my car running like new. So... just got her back from the shop with a new LN IMS bearing, new clutch, new RMS, new AOS, new water pump, low temperature T-stat, new spark plugs and tube O rings, new serpentine belt, new ignition switch, and two new window regulators. Total $5500. That is a lot of money, but considering I went 10 years without taking it to the dealer one time, I felt it was a reasonable average cost of ownership over that time period. Plus, the added peace of mind having the IMSB changed out, and everything in the car now working as new, I have a whole new sense of confidence in the car. I was on the verge of selling it but now, glad I still have my "dream" car. Here's to ten more years!

Vehicle year & how many miles on vehicle before & after 10 yrs ?
Just curious why you went w/ a lower temp thermostat & what is the new temp setting & old ?
Seems there are several early high mile 996's posted lately w/ IMS brgs being changed out that were still in good condition . I'm hoping my 01 might be one of those w/ currently 83k .

My car has about 34k miles. Sort of a garage queen with the weather here in Ohio. The low temp stat was at the recommendation of the garage which is a highly respected Porsche independent. I forgot to notice the temps when I was diving it yesterday but before, it hovered around 185 degrees in normal driving.
Just took it for a spin. The temperature is still at 185 degrees in normal driving as it was before the low temp stat. Hmmmm...?

For the temp, you may want to check if both of your radiator fans run on both low and high settings. If you have Durametric, you can activate the low/high of the fans and check by feeling air pushing out right ahead of the front wheel below the front bumper.

As Ahsai said, check your fans...I would have a peek into the inlets to the condenser/radiators.
The funk that collects there is startling, and may have some effect on cooling efficiency. I know I was shocked at mine.

I clean mine every few years. After the last time, I installed screens in the bumper inlets which you can see in the photo. This actually could be the reason for less cooling as the screens block some of the air flow, I'm guessing as much as 20-30 percent.
