Default 1999 996 - strange clutch question

I've got a '99 996, absolutely problem free.

Strange thing has just started happening: after I shift to the next gear (6 speed stick, not tip), and release the clutch, it revs like i've got the clutch engaged for a few seconds before kicking in.

Then, in a gear, if i accelerate quickly, same effect: quick rev like the clutch is engaged when it is not, then accelerates.

Does this mean back clutch cable or something else? I'm unfortunately not as technical as I wish, so your help is much appreciated.

Wes

id say from experience in many clutches including the one in my 996, that it needs to be replaced, and if you do then you might as well get a good one like the sachs clutch upgrade with lightweight flywheel, if not and you go with OEM then make sure they use the updated parts since the originals had flaws

If your rpms are going up while your foot is on the gas but the car is not going faster then it sounds like your clutch is starting to slip. Hard to tell as your post is not clear. Jeff

Sure sounds like a clutch in need of replacement. If the symptoms are even worse while accelerating uphill, that is an even better indication.

In the old days you could manually turn a dial to tighten up the clutch cable (sort of like tightening up the brakes on a bicycle), but nowadays most clutches are self-adjusting, so when the slipping starts you are unfortunately at the end.

I am sorry friend, but they are right. it is time for a new clutch.

However, there is good news! ... I hope! lol! Tell us, how many miles do you have on your car?

Thanks for the news (more like a confirmation of my fears!)...

Yes, the revs happen when i'm doing straight acceleration for just a moment -- for instance, when i punch it on the highway to get around a car, and it revs as if I'm riding the clutch when I'm no where near it.

I will look for evidence of problems on hills--I do seem to recall it being pronounced like that but will try tomorrow.

The car has 43,400 miles on it and has been very well loved. Interestingly (relatedly?), I threw out my back in June and had to swap with my wife's car, and she drove it (the horror). Then, I let my business partner use it for several weeks and he does a lot of around LA driving (stop and go)--significantly more than I ever have. And he is not used to driving that car. Coincidence?

Sounds like a new clutch replacement is in order. Mine is needing it soon as I'm feeling the exact same thing esp on the hills of San Francisco. I got about 36k on my car. Looks like an upgrade is in order: ). What liteweight flywheel I should be looking for guys? Regards and thanks in advance. Mike

If you replace the clucth and flywheel with aftermarket ones will it last longer? If so which brands are suggested?
Thanks

Unfortunately, I am going to be selling my 996 referenced at the beginning of this string, as I just bought a 04 Cayenne Turbo (still working my wife on the idea of keeping it, but wouldn't mind a cab for a weekend car).

This means I don't want to sink a ton of money into getting this ready, just to turn around and sell it in a few weeks. Perhaps I can find a buyer who would want an otherwise perfect car, but put in his own clutch...

By the way with regards to clutches. My friend Norman was saying that the 996 turbo clutch would fit on the NA 996. He's pulling my leg right : ). Regards. Mike
