you don't have to drop the tranny. It's so much easier but not absolutely needed. The tranny moutn housing is aluminum. It can be "tapped" out. After it's "tapped" out, you cannot put a oem mount in as that HAS to be pressed in. BUT, you can install aftermarket mounts that can be installed without a press.
That's what I did...there's a few aftermarket mounts available

If that's the Wevo Boxter transmission mount please confirm that you installed it in your 996 transmission and it fit. I contacted Wevo and they said it was not designed for the 996 tranny and they could not say if nor would they guarantee it would fit in a 996.
I'd love to install one but I have yet to read of someone's first-hand account of actually installing it - it's always "someone said it would fit" or they read it would fit but never, "I installed it and it fit".

that picture is the one I took over a year ago...it is indeed a wevo product...cheetah is another brand that i was considering but i chose wevo.
i have it installed on my 996 C2. It's been a full year now with it and have logged 15k miles on it with the wevo tranny mount.

Dealer installed a new mount for me under CPO warranty. Needed to drop transmission press out old and press in new mount. Took them a while b/c they didn't have the proper tool and had to order it.

Tranny lowered a little and supported with one person stablizing/holding the tranny, the rubber portion cut out and the alum housing grooved/dremeled/sawed and chiseled/tapped out. Of course the it came out crumpled/damaged
