Since everyone is bitching about K&N CAI
How about a poll - What CAI do you have installed on your 996?

The airbox on a 996 is ducted to pull fresh air from the louvers on the engine lid and it does not pull combustion air from the engine compartment.
So it already has a "cold" air intake system from the factory.
I'm not saying this to disparage the K&N system or any other, but I wonder about the effectiveness of any aftermarket system over the factory system.

If you add an intake system for performance, you are going to be very disappointed. In fact most aftermarket intakes are no better than OEM, and some actually cost you performance. In my case I have an EvoMS V-flow intake for one reason - the sound. The glorious, glorious sound. My biggest knock on a stock 996 is that it is too quiet, too refined. It's part of the reason why the air-cooled guys say that they don't sound like a "real Porsche". But with my V-flow and Fister style mufflers, the low RPM growl giving way to a high RPM howl gives up nothing to my built 3.2 Carrera. THAT is why you install an aftermarket intake, and it is worth every penny.

I ran the Fabspeed V-Flow intake for about a year; I reinstalled the factory airbox a couple of months ago.
* I did not notice a performance improvement either way.
* Due to my wonderfully loud Tubi Style exhaust, I don't miss any additional intake sound, but this can be a very nice benefit
The new Fabspeed setup (the dual-cone config) is really good looking, so I may install one of those sometime. With the dual-filter and the CF baffle, it's one of the best looking aftermarket parts I've seen in a while.

OEM box is best in most cases. Had an EVOMS and sold it because there was no point.
Hell Mine's (famous Japanese skyline tuner) had a record setting R34 GT-R that made like 600HP (or more?) and still ran the stock air box because it wasn't a point of restriction and provided efficient ducting directly to outside air.
If you really want more sound, might as well get a lightweight exhaust. At least then you'll save some weight off the correct end.

At least that's how mine is constructed. I thought I took a pic but I guess it's on my other computer.

True, there are holes at the bottom of the stock intake. I believe these are necessary so water can drain. Those of us with fixed wings get a decent amount of water dumped into the stock airbox.
The EVOMS intake I had also had drainage holes, so neither intake is completely sealed from engine compartment heat. Additionally, the seal on the EVOMS intake does not effectively seal the box against the bottom of the deck lid. Had I kept the intake, I was going to cut a 1/4" plexi piece to more effectively seal the EVOMS airbox.

Effectively the same thing: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...mple-free.html
Several companies sell a true cap and silicone replacement elbow from the box to intake.
