Seems like service and preventative is the first thing to focus on.

It also appears this car doesn't need a lot if mods or upgrades...

I would have to second this one!

not sure this applies to 2004,

Cab hack $Free (cut wire to enable closing/opening at any speed, try not to go too fast)

Smart Top $400 (open top with key fob), illegal in Canada for manufactures to offer that not sure about USA i would think with more litigious system would be the same). Its pretty cool to be walking to car press key fob and the top opens, or closes it as you walking away.

just in case for future reference on the smart top , which would be a sweet feature for the cab!

In terms of bolt-on performance upgrades, there isn't a whole lot you can do with these cars without resorting to high-dollar builds (like forced induction, head work, etc.). Porsche did a pretty good job of wringing out all the power they can make from the factory.

In terms of aesthetics, the sky is limit in terms of options, but that's more a matter of personal taste. Personally, I think less is more with these cars; and I think you'll find that's the general consensus around here.

So worthy of quoting that it should be a sticky. If you want more power out of your 996, sell it and buy a TT or GT3. Because in the end that will be more cost effective. I'm convinced that my Fister style mufflers and EvoMS intake added exactly zero HP to my C2, but they were worth every penny for making it sound like a Porsche.

I second the driving for three months bit. Although you've now probably driven it for 4 extra months so I'd be interested to see what you've done.
I've owned performance cars before, but picked up my first 911 996 last week. I'm planning on just keeping an eye on the CEL, and any ticks, bangs and other weird things going on first for the next two or three months to get used to it.
Then I'll throw in a short shifter, half roll cage and better coils etc as it's going to be a part time track car. Only thing I've done so far is update the stereo head unit and fix the speakers, as who ever the moron was who's played with the electrics at some point had completely taken out the door speakers and tried to do a diy bluetooth hands free that just........well it was just wrong. So all came out and got replaced with a neat finish by a professional. Any smart man never lets me near a big tool kit.
Also the tinting got redone as it had a cheap job at some point and it was all purple and peeling. I'm sure it's illegal in Florida to drive a 911 with bad purple tint at least as far as other Porsche owners go
That's my two cents

If you can find a used pair, the Tubi Style mufflers are awesome.

- Clear corner lights
- Aftermarket stereo (seriously, just spend the $200 for a decent Pioneer or Alpine unit with Bluetooth and iPod integration)
- Short shifter (997 short shifter is a popular one)

First 12 months of ownership of a second hand car : no mods, just getting to know the weaknesses of the car and replace / repair what is needed.

Default 5 months later.

So I've had my 4s cab 5 months and I'm really enjoying it. I could use more power and could see getting a TT down the road some.

At this point I've done a few
few mods.
Clear sides
Non smoker
Cd delete
Interior led's
Bumperplugs
Tow hook license plate bracket
Audiovox dice uni fm modulator for iPhone
4 speakers - 2ohm JBL GTO's

Still want to:
Painted bumperettes
997 ssk
H&R sport springs
