Yep, and are not integral to the block at all. This means a scored cylinder can simply be removed and replaced without splitting the case. Last year I repaired a bad cylinder (too much boost) on a 996TT and left 1/2 the engine together and still dressed with ancillaries. This design was an adoption from the aircooled Mezger engine.

The M96/M97/ Cayenne and now the 9a1 are not this way as their cylinders are integral to the block.

With those engines a cylinder issue becomes an issue with the entire block.

No, that doesn't occur. The new engines are TBD since they lost Nikisil for the first time.
I ask because I had/have a noise they diagnosed as a "bad lifter". They replaced all the lifters....noise still there. Now they say it is "normal". Your comment above hit close to home.

exactly, the ~2004 and older cases even still have the 964 numbers/same basic case. Also nice to have choice of going with OE nikasil/aluminum sleeves or aftermarket steel for crazy-HP builds..

it's unfortunate the m96/97 engines have so many critical failure points(common or not), it's the only thing scaring me from buying a Boxster/Carrera for daily driving...

Didn't know the Cayenne S and Turbo had different cylinder wall treatments, makes me want a C-TT even more

Cheers,

Yes. Zero over revs at any level and no faults noted. 8K miles total.

Yep.. Pack it up and ship it on.

This makes over a dozen of these that were misdiagnosed in the past 3 months or so. Technicians need to attend our practical application classes so they can hear these noises foist hand. If a shop made a bad call on this, it should be on them as the cost of making a mistake.

I hope they didn't charge you for their lack of knowledge and/ or experience with these engines.

have you compared to other GT3's? Mezger's are a 'noisy' engine, valvetrain/chain noise that was 'hidden' in the air-cooled days becomes more apparent on the water-coolers

Lifters replaced under warranty. If not a scored cylinder, not sure what else it could be. It does have that bad lifter sound. No sound when cold, getting worse as it warms up mainly at idle. Cannot hear after around 1500 rpm. Not alarming at this point, but I hear it (and they did too..).

I have compared it and others do not make the sound. I was told exactly what you said....Mezger's are noisy. I did have a factory rep listen to it and he said "normal". dI am not convinced. If it is normal, why did they replace the lifters? Anyway, after taking it out of winter storage, I am going to have an oil analysis done and a boroscope done just to make me feel better.

EVO review says the for 2002-2007 Cayenne's Turbos and later S models have a Nikasil coating. Maybe they meant "Turbo S"

definitely worth doing the analysis and inspection, maybe take a quick sound clip of it when you get it out as well so others can hear it too

The EVO article is BS, Alusil is chosen as an alternative to Nikasil, not in addition to it.
