Default Trans end shifter connection issue

Installing a new engine trans combo into my car and have a shifter cable connection issue at the trans end. My car is an '03 and uses the ball and socket type shifter cable but my transmission doesn't have the 'ball' on the shifter linkage. It just has a straight piece of brass with a groove in it. (It resembles the end of a pencil). I'm guessing it may have come out of an earlier car?? I found an earlier thread on it but that guy was going the route of replacing the shift cables to the earlier style but he never reported back so I dont know if it fixed it or not. I'm sure I might be able to figure out a way to secure mine, but if someone has already done it or knows a way, please let me know.

For future reference to help someone else out who might run into the same issue with the shift cables, I got it figured out. The early 996s came with the single post barb on the shift rod end that looks like the first picture, whereas they made a change in either late 99 or early 2000 to the ball and socket type connector. Well of course the earlier shift cables will not attach to the later style trans and vice versa so depending on which way you might swap out transmissions the other style cable must be installed. I had them side by side and measured them and they are basically the same so I swapped them out (@ a 2 hour job) and all is good.

The earlier style cable part number is 996.424.041.09 which superceded from an .07, .08.

The newer style cable is a 996.424.041.14 which supercedes from a .10, .11, .12, .13.

Hope that helps someone else!

Just replacing the transmission on my '99 and had this same issue (rebuilt transmission has later style connection). Didn't even know there was a change until I found your post documenting this. Very helpful - thanks!

Changing out cables now.
