Default 996.1 and '01 Turbo - storage tray under the steering column - removeable?

The 996.1 and the 2001 Turbo have a storage tray under the steering column for the owners manual. I'm worried this would get in the way of my knee during heel and toeing (even on the 996.2, I'd prefer to have a bit more space for my knee).

Does anyone know if it's removable?

(Also, does anyone know if perhaps the tray is no lower than the underside of the 996.2 steering column?)

(I'd like to figure this out before driving hundreds of miles to test drive a 2001 Turbo I'm interested in.)

Good question. I hit my shin on it at the track but I pushed the seat back a notch or two which helped. I've looked and didn't see any way to remove it easily like with a screw driver. It does look like I could cut it off if I had to.

yes it is. It has two plastic push pins holding it in. The ones where you need to push the center in to remove.

Could you elaborate on "push the center in to remove it"? Push from which direction? Does it require removing any panels? My wife wants me to remove it from her car.

Something like this. Push it through to release. (Then try to find the pin so you can reuse them.)

You have to push the center in so you can pry the pin out. Just like the one posted earlier.

I wasn't able to exactly push the pin out of pull it, though I ended up taking a small screw and screwing it in slightly to get a grip and then pull the screw out with the plastic anchor out. I found one pin but the not the other pin. Pulled the bracket off and put the anchors back in place in the holes left in the leather.

Not bad. I like it much better without the shin kicker and it looks better.
