Default Bad catalytic converter = Aural Elation!

So my 2003 C4S would not pass emissions (Pennsylvania). It was deemed that one of the primary cats had failed and the other was on its way out.

OEM replacement = $2800 PER Cat - Ouch.

After a discussion with my service tech at my local Dealer, they said they had a lot of luck with Fabspeed 996 Sport Catalytic Converter X-Pipe

Fabspeed X Pipe with BOTH Cats = ~$1800. Less Ouch. Done.

The result with the new Cat Pipe(s) and the Fister Exhaust combination has a new grumble that makes me think I am in a new car. Its a delightful aural experience and I gained more HP to boot!

Just thought I would share my experience and if you are considering/need to replace your cats, this is a fun combo.

Cheers!

If you were failing emissions WITH catalytic converters, how do you anticipate passing after removing them?

Ah, the Fabspeed includes high-flow cats. Got it.

That was my first thought as well, perhaps I just don't understand the post.

Fabspeed sells a couple of items. Ones is a cat bypass (delete); the other is an x-pipe with very small high-flow cats. OP bought the latter: "Fabspeed X Pipe with BOTH Cats..."

Greg,
I had the same thing happen with my 2000 C4. One cat was out and the other was on the way out. OEM replacements was out of the question, so I discussed it with the mechanic and decided to go with the Speed Venture X pipe with the high flow cats and I could not be happier. Like your car, I already had the Fister D sport mufflers. The combination of X pipe and Fister mufflers give a silky smooth soundI am in love with the sound of my car

Just to be clear, 996s don't have primary and secondary catalytics. They only have one for each bank. The scanner would show primary because of the software coding, this is not exactly true.

I had both mine replaced under 8 year emissions mandated warranty at dealer but I cannot fathom how OEM Porsche cats are $5k+ and yes the dealer bill was closer to $6k than $5k. But I am equally shocked that aftermarket cats are $2k :/

WTF?

That said are the FabSpeed 200 cel cats? Any droning at highway speeds?

I had the same thing happen recently... one of my OEM cats went bad. Replaced the entire exhaust system with the Fabspeed Performance Package (new headers, X-pipes, cats, O2 sensors, mufflers, exhaust tips, etc.

Pix and sound clip video below:

Cuda 911: Are you passing CA smog with that set-up?

I guess it's called profit margin. Dealer originally quoted $2,800 for one cat, then $2,360, then sold it to me for $1,646. Ridiculous in any case. I was a few months beyond the 8 years and PCNA wouldn't budge on that.

Universal Cell 200 cat elements are $200. Alternative is to have these welded up for another $100 and done.

Haven't had to smog it year. They only require smog testing every few years. Fabspeed assures me it will pass. My mechanic says it will pass too. I will raise holy hell with them both if doesn't.

The porsche OEM price is just criminal. For $2,800.00 per converter it better have internals made from solid 24k gold.

Any semi-completent shop can weld in a new cat converter into our exhaust. There are hundres of sizes/shapes to chose from.

Here is the basic non-fascist state leagal converter for older Porsches. $74.
