Was it at the engine mount area? If you have the stock ones, it could have let go, seems to be common.

I would be worried also now I have read up on the 996 with your extra low mileage. The average for this car is 2,300 miles a year and the engine is right in the range where it might have a problem with the IMS bearing. Have you checked that area? Yes it doesn't surprise me that you say 'and very clean' as the engine has hardly been used. You may have other problems arising very soon. How come you bought a car with such low mileage? I mean you are a regular poster on the forum and must know the pit falls of these 996 cars, extra low mileage being one of them.

You sure it's not coolant? There is a an overflow hose in that area.

What did it look like...engine oil, hydraulic fluid, coolant (not very oil like), ??? Color and viscosity are your friends here.

If engine oil--AOS, leaking spark plug tube are my best guesses

If something else, engine mount is a good bet. If one of them went, it's possible that side of the engine would sag (hang down) more than the other.

I had a mystery oil leak that turned out to be a power steering hose? Figured it out when the system started making noise

do you have a cab?
if yes, it could be the drivers side actuator leaking?
