I'm more of a lurker, than a poster but felt others may be interested in this post. I bit the bullet and used my slush fund (shhhhh, don't tell the boss!) to buy these DEPO LED tail lights for my 2000 996. It truly was plug and play with the only mod being that I moved a resistor that is supposed to get hot sometimes. It took about 10 minutes start to finish.
I posted a couple of pics including one with the old and new lights installed together to really see the change.
I'm not affiliated with DEPO or anyone else, just posting for those interested. I also posted a video on Youtube showing them working through the different functions.
I would have waited until dark for the pics, but I was excited!

Here's a couple more of my car since this is my intro here on the forum. It's my daily driver in Chicago. It goes thru thick and thin with no problems. Come November, I have another set of wheels with Bridgestone Blizzaks and then back to these summers in March usually.
It now has 75,000 miles but had 39,000 when I bought here almost 4 years ago.

looks fantastic. I wish there were some nice tail lights for the widebody cars that matched the light strip of the 4s. The OE lights are so integrated looking, all I want is a new housing really with some really well done LED structures.

I'm pretty surprised that there are not any companies making them. When I was researching them, I found post after post of people trying to find them for the widebodies.

I've had mine for three or four months and love them. They really update the look of the car.

Nice looking Mk I - the lights are definitely a good mod. Gotta love the Guards Red. I am definitely going back to GR next time I change cars. Wheels look good too. Now all you need is a taco wing to complete that aero package.

They do look nice.
I had been considering the DEPO lights but decided against it after reading on here that a substantial number of them have failed on the 997.
Obviously the 996 DEPO lights aren't quite the same as the 997 version. But it isn't clear (to me anyway) whether or not the DEPO LED failures are isolated to the 997 version. Are there 996 owners that have run them through a winter (or two) without any problems?
In case I decide to pull the trigger, is there a good source for them in the US or Canada?

There were several threads on this on different forums. Lights were failing and being returned and/or being thrown out. There were also a few cases of people selling individual lights on ebay since the other one in the pair had failed. The failures had occurred after many months of ownership.
However after looking again it does sound like the problem is believed to be fixed by adding resistors to the lights.
One of the main threads on the subject is here (found by googling): http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...po-lights.html
However I couldn't find any issue being reported with the 996 lights. Although I'm a bit surprised that the issue would be isolated to the 997s. Hence my question about real-world longevity of the 996 lights.
