Default Price checks

My wonderful wife (who got me my dear departed 1999 C2 as a birthday present not long ago) has approved a budget for a replacement. I like this one and it is nearby:

But I can't wrap my head around the price, especially in light of this one, but it is far away and I would have to rely on the kindness of a stranger on this board to eyeball it for me like several folks in Chicago were amenable to doing:

http://www.allgermanauto.com/car-sal...-carerra-targa

The first one has more miles, but is one owner; not clear on the second one's history at this point as I haven't pulled a carfax. Any explanations for the price discrepancy?

Thanks

Oh. More information that I have. I have spoken to the sales guy on the first one. The first one has had no preventative maintenance done but all service has been done at the selling dealership. So no IMS or AOS or any of that fun stuff. Carfax doesn't list the 60k service having been done either. Their inspection after trade in revealed no issues meaning no leaking oil. They didn't drop the transmission or anything like that.

I'd lean towards door #2, price and mileage are lower. GL this time around DTMiller.

The second one is coming in priced under Nada, KBB and Edmunds. The first one is coming in over Nada and Edmunds and under KBB, which appears to think all cars are worth infinity dollars.

First one seems to have a more robust options package as I explore it some more.

Second seems a bit more a stripper - no leather etc. Probably a better bet in the long run though, less miles and all.

If PPI checks out on the second one, its a great deal especially for a targa.

Not sure I would get a Targa (weight, complexity, and repair costs), but if that is what you want go for it. Another Targa issue is interior heat. You don't mention where you are located, but if you live in the south or southwest that could be a question to ask owners in those areas.

The 40K car would have to be significantly better than the 60K car for me to pass up the additional options. In my opinion full leather is a must have in the 996 unless you are mostly focused on the track.

Guards Red is actually a bit hard to find, particularly in the 996.2. Everybody wanted Seal Gray and black!

As for price, Targas are a bit rare so prices are hard to nail down. not sure KBB/Edmunds are going to be particularly accurate. It is a small market. That said, the 40K car seems a bit underpriced and the 60K car is overpriced. But both prices seem like fair starting points for negotiation.

Good luck!

Just noticed the 60K car has 17" wheels... You may want to figure in the cost of an 18" upgrade as you think about it.

It surprises me that your wife would even let you have another Porsche after her lovely 996 birthday present to you was wrecked by you on the track not long ago. Will you be tracking the next one you get? Tell me NO please... I am sick of banging my head against that wall.

I always liked the Targa models and even looked at one before I bought the C4S. The rear glass "hatch" would be really useful. A very nice choice for good weather areas of the country.

Edmunds, NADA, KBB, etc. are totally worthless. Outside of auction data (i.e. Mannhiem) I would use trucar ... http://clearbook.truecar.com/used-po...2u5d/o/t_curve

A very low mileage '02 runs about $19k. Targa/aero kit/full-leather might kick it up to $20k BUT NOT ONE DIME MORE.

In California .. ~60k miles '02 are listing for $25-30 on Craigslist .. Targa might get 10% more. Actually selling price I'd guess is 10% less than list .... Not sure where you would find one for $19k unless very high miles ...

your not banging it hard enough. Use your whole body with a good fling of the neck for the best results...

My wife is an amazing person. If I were to track this car I wouldn't do so the way I did that one. I don't know if I have the will to get back on a track. It was really scary and I am lucky to be alive much less shopping for a replacement.

From responses it appears I should pay somewhere between $19k and $30k for an 02 Targa. Perfect.

Show us a low mileage '02 in good condition for $19K.

I don't know where people get these numbers...
