Dont get sensitive on me. We were talking cracked heads. Seriously sorry to hear about your engines demise but I and many others would have appreciated the details to learn from it. I was just messing with you about the "cracked heads" because I know you knew better and was trying to make the OP feel better.

I say dont sugar coat anything about the M96 and we can get on with preventing and/or fixing the problems. After all we are all stuck with the design unless we do a swap. Once again, sorry about yours. I know they aint cheap to fix. No offense intended, I was just messing with you.

It still amazes me that KK still has this piece of crap. I surely hope he sells it soon and moves on...

This may be geting OT but;

Alp, Im just referring to the M96 engine, not the whole car. The 996 is a fine series. Look at the TT, GT2, and GT3. All great cars because of the different engine. You cant possibly believe the M96 engine is anything but a total disaster. Too many design flaws in the attempt to cut cost. All 996's should have come with the Metzger in NA or TT form. You can thank Toyota for this not being the case.

assuming all that (which is inline with what I have heard) what is the best option for someone who owns one of these time-bombs? How do you get back on the road without getting into 5 figure swap and repair bills? Different engine?

I would read Jake Raby's articles and book in which he explains the most common modes of failure, then eliminate each one as you can. Also follow his advice about oil type used and frequency of oil changes. Thats a start. If moneys not a concern, use one of his engines.

Porsche had little choice in the M96 engine. If they didn't go with it, there probably wouldn't be a Porsche today. You really think they spent a mountain of money developing the M96 just because?

Imre, you really think there is that much difference in the manufacturing costs of the NA Metzger vs. M96? Especially considering development. Wonder what the real cost difference between the two is? Would have been sweet if every NA 996 had one. Even a detuned one.

I absolutely think there was a ton of money to be saved with the use of the M96 otherwise they wouldn't have done it. Its all amout the profit, Toyota just showed them how to really efficient. Originaly Porsche was going to use a V6 in the Boxter (they ended up selling the development to Ford and Ford re named it the Duratec V6). They probably decided to beta test the M96 in the Boxter before releasing the 996. Anyhow, its always about the money and more so when they planned to make 160K of them.

So instead of bitchin all the time, man up and trade your car in for one with a Metzger engine in it. Going by your feeling/opinion, it certainly appears anything you do is really just a band aid, a very big one at that.

Enjoy it,live with it, and shut up, or move on...

Are you advocating an M96 owner support group in which we can lament about our engine woes? Whose "bitchin". Just an observation and opinions.

AFAIK, you've never had anything go wrong with your car. It's usually the real victims that has the right and justification to start posts about how they had to repair this or how this broke. That is what bitchin or venting is about. For you, it's more like complaining and crying over something that's never even materialized for you...

Preventative maintenance is quite different from actual repairs.
