Question 2001 3.4L Engine Removal Question

What is the best way to actually lower the engine out of the car, I have found instructions that mention some sort of retainer plate and a floor jack but that sounds wrong to me.

Anybody know the best way to lower the engine out of the car?

Thanks!

First you need to make sure your jacks have the car up enough. Then use ATV jack along with a transmission jack as a combo.

You can substitute the transmission jack with a small hydraulic jack and a ratcheting strap. Thwt what I use but the back of the car has to be nice and high. I used pair of 3T axle stands and 3 concrete patio stone under each stand to get the proper height. This worked really well last summer. The ATV jack will need at least two slabs at the top and maybe a rubber floor mat to keep the concrete slabs and the engine sump pan a little isolated. Then when lowering you will have to do it in two stages to remove the patio labs from the ATB jack. It's not complicated even though it might spunds like it is.

Nice site, wish I saw it a year ago, it would have reduced my learning curve.

I actually bought my car a year ago and it ran for about 2 months before it blew up, cracked heads... Never rebuilt a Porsche in my garage before but I am really impressed at the engineering so far, really cool

This seems to be a common problem with the 3.4L hence why many avoid ths engine in favor of the 3.6L.

So tell us how common this is. Stats? Surely in 30 minutes you can make some crap up to scare the ********* off us.

SP, are you really going to challenge my statement when you know its true? You really want me to reference the well documented "cracked head" syndrom? Sources are so plentiful that its laughable for you to even ask.

Even though I recently went thru a motor replacement which was mainly due oil starvation
This posted by you, doesnt exactly help your case about the 3.4L.

I know your just being yourself but most on here know all about the 3.4L cracked head problems. There is even a sucessful repair documented on the forum. Since you insist, this is from a very well respected member:

Then I dropped the engine and begin disassembling it. Soon I found the crack in cylinder head 1-3, cylinder 1 at the inner exhaust valve seat, which you can see in the photo above. This seems to be a very common problem, and the most common area for cracks in the heads of M96 engines.
Found a set of heads through a member in Florida at an incredible price, but I asked the member, who is a Porsche tech to check the heads for cracks. He said he had never seen a cracked head but would gladly check the heads. A little penetrating dye showed that the 1-3 head was cracked a cylinder #1, inner exhaust valve seat. Found another set, but when they were checked 1-3 was also cracked. Do we see a pattern here?
Not from Jake Raby but he has also documented the same. SP one day you will learn, I dont just make #$%^ up and Im not a total n00b mehanic.

Still not convinced? From Jake:
I spoke to Jake Raby and he told me that in a 10 day period they tore down 5 engines for big bore upgrades, and 4 had cracked heads
4 out of 5 had cracked heads??? Your right, not common at all.

My losing my engine has nothing to do with what you are posting. That is the main reason why I have not gone public with its demise.....you would be on it like white on rice. I track my car and drive it to my fullest. I caused the issue...not the motor.

I'm not falling further into your game than I already have. Bugger off.
