Default Brake pad retainer bolt safety spring w/o buying entire kit?

Hey everyone,

I personally changed my brakes for the first time today, and didn't realize there was a little safety spring on the retainer bolt when I pounded it out. Any idea where I can get just the safety spring, or else am I ok without them? I found the retainer kit, but all I need is a pair of the little safety springs.

Retainer kit for $38:

Amazing how easy it is to change the pads once I got them unstuck from the vibration dampers, did the whole job in about an hour. Was able to use a screwdriver to unstick the dampers without taking the calipers off. Also installed the 997 shifter today, very nice upgrade.

Thanks,
Chris

Are you talking about the small cotter hairpin? (aka R-clip)

I'm not sure of the size, but there is nothing special about it... A good hardware store, "real" autoparts store, Grainger or McMaster-Carr should have them.

I definitely wouldn't run without them, but a conventional cotter pin or safety wire would also do a great job making sure that pin doesn't back out if you can't find an R-clip in the right size. Just a bit more work next time you change the brakes.

Yup, I meant the cotter pin. Will see what I can find. Please let me know if anyone has a part number that matches the size.

Thanks,
Chris

Looks like they might also be called 'hitch pins', can pick them up at Home Depot or Lowes, sounds like the 7/8" length works:

Yup, same thing.

But if you say "hitch pin" to your typical Home Depot clerk they will probably steer you to one of these for a trailer hitch... Same concept, just much larger!

The pins are called hairpin spring cotter pins. I had a friend give me the size closest to what Granger sells. The size is .059" wire dia and 1 1/8 long. I'm calling Granger tomorrow and order them (Item No. 2MVJ5). 100 ea for $8.09.
I will be putting on my track pads in a few week and will let you know the results.

An inch of bailing wire will work just fine...

^ What he said. There isn't anything magical about those. They just keep the retaining pin from sliding out of the caliper.

You can pick them up at any Ace True Value hardware store or any Automotive parts supply like NAPA.
