996 prices at dealers are off the charts....

Yeah, some dealers are clearly out of their minds. Not sure on the value of this particular car but I have seen ordinary C2 with tons of miles on them for over 30k...
Meanwhile similar private party cars are selling for half that. Makes me want to buy a car private party and see what these dealerships will give me for the trade in towards a brand new Porsche

Three Wheelin'
They're only as crazy as the buyers who continue to buy them. When I was looking a couple of years ago, a local dealer had a bare bones C4 Cab priced in the mid-40s. I'm sure I still have the emails somewhere but suffice it to say they were adamant about their pricing. Sure enough the car sold. I'm not saying their pricing is right or that I'd pay their prices...but...maybe their prices aren't completely off base either...at least as long as there are people continuing to pay those prices.

I did notice that blue book values have crept back up recently....but that's an aggressive price. As someone else pointed out it make me want to take my car over for a trade in.

I just spent the last year and a half aggressively looking for the "right" 02-04 911, and IMO the prices have gone up significantly in the last 6 months across the board - dealers, ebay, autotrader, etc.

Yes that's true, but they went up last Summer and didn't go down last Winter. At least not that I noticed, and until last month I was hitting refresh on all my saved searches several times an hour. Well not quite that often, but often.

This, and some would rather buy from a dealer that could offer their reputation, service, warranty, and a detailed and sorted out car. These factors are worth it to some in factoring in the price.(not me though)

I couldn't find too many wholesale auction numbers, but here are some for 2004:
911 C4 Cab 03/07/13 RIVRSIDE Regular $49,500 10,723
911 C4S Cab 04/03/13 PALM BCH Regular $42,000 34,588
911 C2 Cab 06/28/13 PA Regular $36,000 18,576
That doesn't count auction fees, recon...and no PPI's here!! These are before profits too...hard to believe they get these numbers, but then again there is always some rich guy that says "I always wanted one" and pays full retail. Let's just all hope we find one of those when/if we decide to sell!!

Not sure about seasonality, esp for west coast, but imho, the bid-ask spread is super wide. Therefore, if comparing one bid to the ask, it appears to have gone up, and vice versa.
Here in SF area, 02-04 c4s with 50 to 70k miles asking between $30 to $40k. Slightly more if want cab. The biggest misconception is that dealer cars are cleaner and more reliable. I find them often lower miles, but not always better.
