Default 2001 996 c2 Coolant temperature sensor

Hi Folks,

First post over here after some time away after being on the 924/944/968 board for years.

I have a 2001 manual transmission car with an LN thermostat. I noticed a few months ago that the temperature gauge was slow coming off of the peg and sometimes stayed at zero. I am up here in Canada and with the cold weather we have had, thought this was due to the outdoor temp and the thermostat. Yesterday, I spent 4 hours in the car in 80F temperatures and the temp needle stayed at zero. I used the HVAC function monitoring feature to look at the coolant temperature and it read 0C. I figure I have either

a). A bad sensor
b). A bad connection at the sensor, or
c). A wiring fault

The thing that is bothering me is that there was no indication by CEL or by the temp gauge that there is an issue. Because the sensor is reading zero, the rad fans did not come on but luckily, I had the AC running part of the time so the fans would have been on then.

Has anyone had a similar issue and if so, what was the cause.

Thanks!!!!!

Not a very common problem but very easy to check. From Bentley manual, you can check:
- 5v supply between the two wires connected to the sensor (unplug connector to sensor) whenever ignition key is ON
- resistance of sensor should be
0C/32F 5-7k ohm
20C/68F 2-3k ohm
60C/180F 0.4-0.8 k ohm

The sensor is #27 in this diagram

Good luck.

Thanks very much for the response. Is the sensor hard to access? I can't seem to find it in the engine compartment. Is it underneath?

Cheers!

Yes, and you can get to it from under the car, between the right catalytic converter and the engine, #2 in the diagram below.

Alternatively if you remove the air filter box, you could access it from the top.

Awesome. Thanks again. Should have taken care of this when I was changing the oil/filter yesterday!! My guess would be that #12 in the picture above is the engine compartment temperature sensor. I need to check that one too because my engine compartment fan does not seem to run.

Cheers!!

Yes, #12 is the engine compartment temp sensor. If the sensor gets seperated from the rubber grommet that it's mounting on, do not push the sensor down on the grommet. The grommet will drop ino the abyss of the engine....remove the grommet and put the sensor back on it first, then slide the whole thing back onto the intake runners.

Ahsai, I just popped the engine bay open, and found my temp sensor just sitting ON the engine. The clip (a c-shaped piece of plastic) is still on the intake, but the grommet is gone. Do you happen to have the part number for this? Its the piece that #12 fits into in the diagram. Thanks in advance!!

Hold down the Recirculating & Air up buttons for 5 seconds. The + - buttons go up and down through the list of "c" codes. The center vent button switches the left display between the "c" code and its actual value. Press the Auto button to exit.
