2002 996 c2 bye bye engine, hello c4s engine - advise please!
Hey all,
So this would be my first post. I recently bought my buddies 02 996 c2 with a blown engine. The engine is dropped and I've been searching for a replacement for quite some time now until I came across this:
2002 Porsche Carrera 4S Coupe 3.6 75,227 - YouTube
So I bought it for $6850, shipping it to Buffalo, NY and I'll be picking it up from there (carrying it over to Toronto).
I know the deed is done so there is no point in asking but I couldn't help but post my questions and ask ya'll for some words of wisdom.
1) Are there any compatibility issues I should watch out for?
2) What do you guys think of that engine (the video link is a running video of it)
3) How can I check if this engine has done the IMS swap (or should I not bother with it considering the engine has 75k and the ims would of gone by now if it were planning on going bad)
4) What can I do to the engine to capitalize on the face that it isnt installed yet? For example Should I have my tech powerwash it or just leave it as is
5) Is the slight ticking sound normal in the car? ( it goes away when the engine is revved) Sounds like tappets to me. Should I be concerned? Does the cost of fixing this tapping sound outweigh the benefits of repair?
6) This engine did not come with the engine computer nor the ignition computer, would there be compatibility issues with my 996 c2s existing engine/ignition computer?
Thanks in advance for any help fellas! Excited to pick the engine up and get this project going!

ims is a wear item, replace it!
Clean it and while, out replace the normal wear items- ie AOS, water pump , check plugs etc. I would have an Indy go over it carefully to ensure all is well before you put it in.

Take a picture of the IMS bearing flange, it will tell you if its original or not. Wash the engine before installation, replace the AOS. Do you have the original engine? What exactly went on it? I pulled and refreshed my 99 last summer and am local to you, if you need help, let me know.

I'd have a M96 specialist go over the engine completely before install. Pull the plugs (replace them) use a bore scope to look inside and check on the valves/pistons/cylinder walls. Replace the Air oil separator, water pump, and if the ticking sound is bad lifters, now would be an ideal time to replace them before installing. IMS replacement & RMS replacement should be done as well. And take the sump plate off the engine so you can check the oil baffles and make sure the oil pickup is not clogged with any debris. Replace the baffles if they look beat.
You have an opportunity to "do it once and do it right". I'd take it.

Thanks guys, any recommendations on a Porsche parts supplier here in Toronto that is reasonably priced? AOS + IMS from what I'm reading are the two main parts I need to procure and install before mounting the engine. Thanks again fellas!

As long as it is not an X51 option, it is exactly the same engine as your car come with. In fact, it is the same from airbox to the mufflers. There is no difference in the engine between a C4S and a C2. You should be able to plug in your oem harness, computer and it should run fine.

Take a look at the plug coils for cracks. Replace if you see any. Note that lifters are expensive. Especially on the vario-cam side (intake). BUT! It is an ideal time to replace any collapsed ones while you have the engine out. Easy access! Another thought...look at the clutch/throw out bearing/pilot bearing/pressure plate/flywheel (dual mass flywheel should "wind-up" a 1/2 inch or so and unwind on its own if good). All of this seems overkill but since the engine is out, it never gets cheaper to check these items!
