RAC would not do mine three or so years ago. The key sat in Hans' drawer for a few months and I took it to Park Place (dealer). Either way, if you can go without keyless entry it's the way to go. I wanted Hans to do it because I am very loyal to RAC and it broke my heart to go to the dealer. Glad they're doing it now. Haven't been to a dealer since!

The Porsche Key scam is really annoying. Forcing the owner of a 15 year old car to pay tribute to the dealer doesn't seem right.

So I emailed keysinthepost.com and had the wrong page to just get a key cut, here is the correct key: https://keysinthepost.com/product/porsche-key-blade/

I ordered two of them, with shipping, it was $54.88, so a little more than $25/key.

I will then get a remote off ebay or from Sunset with the code, and with a PST2, I understand you can code it to your car. I have a local shop to me, Chicago Performance and Tuning, who has the tool, and I know the owner, so I will go over there to see if he can code it for me. Will take some pictures of what we do. I have to have him re-code the trip computer to "on" once I install the trip computer stalk and wiring harness.

Sunset was cheaper than ebay when I did it but you have to call them. If its a 99 make sure you get the one button remote.

I used keysinthepost to cut a Porsche key for me and it came out great. Amazing that they can do it from a picture.

Hey Paul, please keep us posted on how that works out. I'll likely order a key in the next day or so and then go from there.

No, RAC in Dallas can do it IF you bring the car to them.

And you have to buy the parts from their local dealer (who actually does the programming).

Total price is about $365 - if you can get there.

I'm in the same boat - just one , well-worn key.

Would be thankful to hear of an alternative to the dealer (mine has the programming capability "offline" at moment, whatever that means).

Hey guys, so I've been in contact with the guys at keys in the post. Great service so far. Ben has responded quickly and kindly to all of my inquiries. Anyway, the key is cut and the transponder is in it. You just don't have remote access. Here's what I understand:
The key will disarm the alarm and let you start the engine. The alarm might go off when you open the drivers door, but as soon as you turn the key in the ignition it will turn it off and let you start the car.

Let me know if anyone has experienced something different, but for the price, it seems like a fair deal and not much of a liability if you just want a back up key.

Unless I'm mistaken, I don't think it will start your car unless your car's computer has been coded to accept the transponder "pill" in the key. I think you will simply have a door key.

http://www.lostporschekeys.com they were so helpful 2002 996 lost key and re programmed transponder Lilly is the best she cares. I saved about 1,000 from what the dealership wanted. The transponder sits under the seat it took about 2 minutes to take seat off and get to it the dealership wanted 2 hours of labor. There are just 4 bolts.

For what its worth.
1. New Country Porsche in Greenwich: we don't cut keys, go see a locksmith, and it starts at $185 to program a fob.

2. Danbury Porsche: $75 to program your fob, $25 to cut your key, we have 2 blanks and one head in stock if you want additional ones done. We would be happy to cut your blank and program your fob. We will call you back with some options on replacing your 1996 switchblade integrated key and fob.

Wow, what a difference between two dealerships, each about half an hour away from me.

You don't necessarily have to go to the dealer to get a new key.If you search for locksmiths in your area (use yelp, look at the reviews) you should be able to find a reputable Locksmith that can cut and program you a new key

Take my door lock out and send it to them? That sounds scary. Wish there was someone in Maryland that did the key and fob for alot less.
