Kudos for doing this yourself though I don't think I'd do it!! I'll stick to wrenching on bikes and let the indie to the 996!!

Why? Porsche has always bent us over with the dry method without any lube historically.
Alp, I think you have just joined Sneaky P in one of the funniest reponses of the year. Thanks FB.

On a side note, I will be conducting a test to see how far I can throw the "triple square" bellhousing bolt. Thats just stupid when they could have used an allen.
I was told because of manufacturing the tripple square is so popular. The triple square is easier to self locate than an allan head.

+1, I would say this is exactly what the sludge is, clutch dust and oil misting from the RMS over time, its thickened enough with the dust to not let it drip onto the floor.
I've got my trans off at the moment for its second rebuild in my ownership, although its a different issue from the first rebuild.

KK...gotta hand it to you. When I read the title of your post, I fully expected you to find a leaking, twisted, burned out, battered, ball dropping IMS. Even if you really didn't.

Thanks for showing restraint and not doing anything silly. Glad you are taking care of that RMS and I really hope you start enjoying actually driving your car.

Incidentally, mine is going in the shop Wednesday for a long overdue new clutch, RMS and, dare I say it, IMS. I will miss my day without driving my 996.

You were bored, so you yanked your tranny out for preventive maintenance?

Dude - you are completely neurotic about this car. Have you ever looked underneath a Porsche before? They all leak!

Owning this car is obviously hazardous to your health and your sanity. You are determined to find something wrong no matter what. You're supposed to DRIVE and ENJOY your car!

Leftlane, pulling the trans was fun and good experience. Cleaning everything is fun. I also got to have fun cutting and welding while building an engine support bar. Mine cost $15 instead of $250. Paying for all the new parts, not so much fun. Who doesnt enjoy working on their Porsche?

The good news, it was just the RMS leaking and not the IMSB.

I applaud your mechanical abilities KK, but you really do need to drive your Porsche more before you make it absolutely perfect. At least your sense of humor has made significant improvements.

KrazyK,
Not sure which RMS seal(s) you bought, but there are at least two ways the new seals come.

My first one was mounted on blue plastic "carrier". The carrier fit butt against the crank end. I could not get it to slide on, Dry or Wet. The lip kept turning under.

The second one was mounted on a clear bell/funnel shaped carrier/installer. With that one the clear carrier fit over the crank end and then I could hold the seal in place and slide the carrier out. Then I mounted the tool and it went in very smooth. YMMV

Frank, I actually ordered 2. One of each type because I couldnt decide which was the latest greatest design and wasnt sure how steep my learning curve will be using the Porsche tools. Thanks for the pics. What repair work did you do the most recent time? 2nd pic.
