Default RE: Refurbish OEM Bilsteins

About a year ago, I purchased and had installed an aftermarket suspension system. When it was installed, I kept the OEM set with the idea to have it refurbished and if I didn't like the one I have now, I would reinstall it. I have sent numerous email to various Bilstein facilities requesting instruction how much to refurbish and where to send it. I have never received a reply and now I have decided to take the aftermarket unit off. Can anyone suggest a way of contacting Bilstein or someone else to have the units refurbished?? I am located in SoCal. All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

they can't be rebuilt. You can call Bilstein in San Diego and ask. That's what they told me.

Bilstein only rebuilds their aftermarket shocks. They will not rebuild OEM shocks even though they might've manufactured them. It says so right on their website.

for whatever it is worth...

I used to race an 84 911. I had the factory original shocks rebuilt and revalved by Bilstein of America. (I had put bigger torsion bars in it and needed more agressive valving) This was about 7 years ago. At that time it was a regular service they offered and was reasonably priced.

I know there is likely a big difference between the 80's Carerra's and our 996's. Worth a try though.

I've never heard of problems having Bilstein rebuild OEM shocks unless they are built to be non-rebuildable. The Miata guys do it all the time.

if the shocks are pinched closed, which is how they are on my '03 C4S, then Bilstein won't rebuild them.

Ah ok, ya I've heard the same. I didn't know ours were pinched. That sucks I was hoping to just have them rebuilt when the time came.

Thanks JML, I called and it seems that Mr. French is no longer with Bilstein, but I left a VM for someone else they referred me to. I will post the results of my efforts

^^^ if you get anything but a "no", I will truly be amazed.

The only OEM shock I could even think of that they would rebuild are the GT3 shocks.
